A promotional ad from NBCUniversal marking Black History Month, which aired during Monday’s TodayThe show featured protesters and left-wing politicians, but it ignored Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas (South Carolina) and Senator Tim Scott. However, the montage featured footage of former California Senator Shirley Chisholm and Vice President Kamala Harris. There was also footage of scores of Black Lives Matter demonstrators.
Not only were prominent politicians featured, but many black celebrities were also included. NBA star Steph Curry, Saturday Night LiveAmong many others, the ad featured Keenan Thompson from cast and Mike Tirico, NBC Sports anchor, respectively. Brandon Leake, a poet and author, narrated the advertisement. He declared:
The black community is everywhere your eyes can see, from those who dreamed for the future to those who made it possible for us all to achieve our goals. Stand on the shoulders heroes, we unify and seek to educate, entertain, empower, and encourage our global community to embrace diversity.
If the goal is to celebrate “excellence,” then why not feature Thomas and Scott, two men who rose to the highest levels of government? If the goal is to celebrate “diversity,” why not embrace diversity of thought by featuring conservative figures as well as liberals?
While they have omitted them from Black History Month NBC and MSNBC were happy to denigrate Thomas and Scott.
