Patton Oswalt want you to be sure he is a true believer. Really. No, Oswalt personally hasn’t cancelled his old friend Dave Chappelle (“Sssss, Booo!”), but it’s because he’s pretty sure Chappelle can continue “evolving” to the higher plane where Oswalt and other enlightened lefties dwell in beatific complacency.
At Chapelle’s invitation, Oswalt recently appeared at the former’s show, doing an impromptu standup set. He then posted photos of him and Chapelle backstage to Instagram. It was a bad move.
See, several months ago, Chapelle ran afoul of the Transgender Industrial Complex by publicly saying sensible things about biology. He agreed with “Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists” (TERFs) about women having lady parts.
There was, as you’d expect, Drama! and Chappelle is persona non grata to the better sort of woke activists. Even worse, Chappelle refused to apologize and debase himself. In reality, he was quite stubborn.
So Oswalt’s picture was not well received. Consider how Stalinists reacted to Oswalt’s photo of a junior member of the politburo taking a picture with Leon Trotsky.
Oswalt is no Chappelle (and he’s no Patton either) so he immediately issued a craven apology that managed to patronize the trans movement while demeaning his pal Dave.
“I support trans peoples’ rights — ANYONE’S rights — to live safely in the world as their fullest selves. For all the things he’s helped ME evolve on, I’ll always disagree with where he stands NOW on transgender issues,” Oswalt wrote. “But I also don’t believe a seeker like him is done evolving, learning. You know someone that long, see the struggles and changes, it’s impossible to cut them off. Impossible not to be hopeful and open and cheer them on.”
Give Dave some credit, folks. He’s really just as virtuous as we are – he just doesn’t know it yet.
He repeated the message in social drone speak in case anyone missed it.
“I’m an LGBTQ ally. I’m a loyal friend. There’s friction in those traits that I need to reconcile myself, and not let cause feels of betrayal in ANYONE else. And I’m sorry, truly sorry, that I didn’t consider the hurt this would cause. Or the DEPTH of that hurt.”
Are you a loyal friend? Chappelle ought to think twice about inviting an inept apparatchik on his TERF.
