CBS Warns GOP Midterm Wins One of the ‘Top Global Risks’ in 2022

Dienstag, CBS Mornings co-host Tony Dokoupil and Eurasia Group president Ian Bremmer sounded the alarm over the possibility of Republicans winning big in the 2022 midterm elections, something they hysterically labeled one of “the top global risks” in the year ahead. The pair claimed any GOP victory in the midterms or the 2024 presidential contest would be seen as “illegitimate.”

“A new report is detailing what it says are the biggest risks facing the globe in 2022 and the findings may surprise you,” Dokoupil declared. Bremmer was the next to speak. “Number three, midterm elections here in the U.S., a top risk for 2022. How come?”

Bremmer replied:

Maybe the surprise was the least. This midterm election will be the most crucial in American History. The January 6th election is just days away. As you may know, the deeply flawed 2020 elections have prompted us to hold them again in 2019. In the United States, there have not been any lessons learned. It is even more divided than thatA large percentage of Americans are also interested in this topic. 64% in an NPR poll yesterday, say they thought the United States’ democracy was in crisis.

He then identified the Republican Party specifically as the origin of the global threat. “…the United States has an election process that is increasingly broken, increasingly delegitimized. And the midterm elections, especially if you have significant win for a Trump-led Republican Party, means that 2024 is going to be seen as illegitimate and potentially a constitutional crisis.”

Bremmer concluded: “In the world’s most powerful country, it’s hard not to rank that high on your list.”Dokoupil has agreed to: “It’s deeply worrying.”

The segment went on to mention that the number one global risk on the Eurasia Group’s list was China’s poor handling of the ongoing COVID pandemic. Bremmer and Dokoupil believe that a global health crisis which has claimed millions of lives is equal to Republican victory at the polls.

TONY DOKOUPIL – A new report details the top risks that the planet faces in 2022. The findings might surprise you. It’s a report that comes from the Eurasia Group, that’s a political risk and research consulting firm. It is closely watched every year as it ranks the most dangerous global risks. Ian Bremmer is the founder and president of Eurasia. He joins us for details.

We’re going in reverse order on the top three, Ian. Number three is the U.S. midterm election. This will be a high-risk event for 2022. Why is this?

IAN BREMMER This election is one of the most significant in American history. The January 6th election is just days away. And as we all know, there have not been any lessons learned in America since 2020’s deeply challenged elections. The country is much more divided and a large number of Americans, 64% in an NPR poll yesterday, say they thought the United States’ democracy was in crisis.

The United States’ election process is becoming increasingly dysfunctional, more delegitimized, unlike countries like Canada and Japan that have seen very successful elections over the past few months. Even if Trump’s Republican Party is victorious in the midterm election, 2024 will likely be viewed as an illegitimate election and a potential constitutional crisis.

In the world’s most powerful country, it’s hard not to rank that high on your list.

DOKOUPIL: It’s deeply worrying.
