I thought if we’re going to list the best, we should also list the worst, and as I started to compile the list I realized that what I was undertaking was an impossible task. I can’t choose which one was the worst because 2021 was a year of so many bad films that I’m having a hard time deciding.

One thing is certain. Some films disappointed me. There were films that I wanted to like but ended up feeling disappointed and let down. The films that promised top-quality ribeye but delivered an excellent piece of jerky, with ketchup.

So let’s go through these top five, and you can list your top five in the comments below. Be aware that some may contain spoilers.

5. Mortal Kombat

It shouldn’t be this hard. A fighting tournament is held in another dimension, with the entire world as the prize. We’ve made better movies about martial arts tournaments with far fewer stakes like Karate Kid Bloodsport. How is it that we can’t just take the spirit of those movies and add a little fantasy/sci-fi?

I endured 2021’s Mortal KombatIt was more time than I spent watching it. Actually, I do recall pausing the game at one point and then moving on to something more exciting. I continued to play the game again once I was able to pay attention and not distractedly browsing Reddit.

It starts off interestingly with Sub-Zero explaining why Scorpion and Scorpion are so close, but it soon devolves. He is a shabby MMA fighter and must discover his inner strength in a group of more well-known characters. I found it difficult to really like him. His story is far more interesting than the cloud watching. You will also find moments in this film that will make you cringe, much like in Mortal Kombat 2.

This is yet another absurd attempt to take a great franchise to the big-screen.

4: Venom 2 – Let Their Be Carnage

Everyone wanted to become Spider-Man as a kid. However, me being strange, I wanted to become Venom. The idea of having an alien symbiote partner that I could transform into Spider-Man-like fighting machines at will seemed solid. And the black suit made it even cooler.

It was thrilling to hear about the Venom film’s first release. My excitement grew when I heard that Eddie Brock was being played by Tom Hardy. I tempered my expectations since this was a Sony property, not a Marvel/Sony work, and to be sure, I’m glad I did. I was the first. Venom wasn’t bad, but it could have been far better. Sadly, I can’t say the same for the second one.

It was a shallow and predictable plot that felt less like a movie with substance than filler. In other words, it’s a Sony superhero film. My biggest problem wasn’t even with that, though. The fact that the film could have been a better buddy comedy, but became more about Brock/Venom bickering as a married couple was my biggest problem. It was annoying to watch, especially because it felt like that too-thick side-plot didn’t even really go anywhere.

3: Godzilla vs Kong

Kaiju movies don’t have to be very deep. You can cut corners when you have huge monsters throwing their hands. This is a great example of this. Pacific Rim. The second example is a great example of what not to do. Pacific Rim. We also now have Godzilla vs KongThis is the best way not to make a movie about kaiju.

To give you an idea as to how disappointing and underwhelming this movie was, I attempted to recall, from memory, much of the plot points and characters and couldn’t remember the vast majority of the people in that movie or the reasons for them being there. Although I do remember that there was an adorable little girl who communicated with Kong using sign language, and Eleven from Stranger Things appears in the movie, it is not clear what her actions were.

But I remember that Godzilla and Kong were rivals, and that a fight would be inevitable. After their epic battle they had to unite after slugging it all out. That created a strange respect between them. The end of the film.

Godzilla vs Kong had its moments, and those moments happened when they weren’t trying to shoehorn human elements into it that basically was there to be filler.

2: No cost to the Guy

No cost to the GuyAll the necessary elements were present to make it a fun film. It featured a game background, had incredible digital action and even included Ryan Reynolds laughing. What it didn’t have was a way to keep my attention focused on it.

Although the movie is colorful and should have many action scenes, it does not contain any references to my favorite things. No cost to the Guy didn’t manage to keep my attention. In fact, I have to confess that I didn’t even finish it. It was so irritating and poorly acted dialogue that I almost turned it off. I became so disengaged from the plot that I started to glance at my phone more than the movie itself.

A good copy of No cost to the GuyWatch out! The Lego Movie. It’s effectively the same premise but executed far better.

1: Space Jam: A New Legacy

Perhaps Lebron is really that. ShouldPut down your stoic grin and continue to dribble.

When 1996’s Space JamWhen it was in theatres, I was thrilled to witness the show. The movie was immensely popular around the world. I even had the entire soundtrack on CD and to this day I can’t hear one of the songs on it without getting a little nostalgic. To be honest, the movie doesn’t hold up as well to my adult self as my kid self, but even with that said, I wouldn’t say it’s a bad movie.

Space Jam 2 tries to reach all of the high notes but fails due to modern elements. Lebron James does not replace Michael Jordan. A digital evil AI cannot replace the Monstars. Lola Bunny, modern Lola Bunny, is not a replacement. The plot is, more or less, a direct rip-off of the better Space Jam but with Warner Bros effectively advertising itself while stroking James’s ego, which he really doesn’t need more of. It adds just a little bit of wakefulness, such as stripping Pepe Le Pew’s character, which is too much for this #MeToo age.

They put the boys in The Clockwork Orange in there, but I’ll let you figure out why that’s a bit hypocritical on your own.

If you haven’t seen the 2021 Space Jam yet, just skip it. Save yourself the pain and go see the original.
