“I’m saving her for Ginsburg.”
President Donald Trump is “saving” Judge Amy Barrett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit as a replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg according to a Sunday Axios report.
Barrett was a popular choice by many to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, but sources told Axios that Trump made clear he wanted to save Barrett for the future, reportedly telling aides last year, “I’m saving her for Ginsburg.”

According to Axios, Barrett’s pro-life position was a roadblock to nominating Barrett to replace Kennedy. With a slim majority in the Senate, losing the pro-choice votes of Lisa Murkowski, R-Ak, and Susan Collins, R-Me, could have sunk Barrett’s nomination.
Trump and his aides didn’t have a problem back-pocketing the more conservative Barrett, confident Republicans would increase their Senate majority during the 2018 midterm election.

Ginsburg, 86, recently returned to the court after health issues caused her to miss a series of cases. Whether or not the liberal justice plans to retire soon has been the subject of rampant speculation.
Should Trump get the chance to nominate Ginsburg’s replacement, it would be the third nominee Trump has put up for the Supreme Court, following the successful nominations of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
