Liberals Are Mad That Conservatives Like Ricky Gervais Even Though He’s ‘Not on Their Side’

Liberals are astounded that conservatives enjoyed Ricky Gervais’ Hollywood-bashing diatribes at the 77th annual Golden Globes, even though the comedian’s views don’t align exactly with right-wing ideology.

Some left-leaning commenters on social media seemed hell-bent on informing conservatives that Gervais was most definitely not “on their side.”

“To all the right-wing, anti-‘woke’ dudes who seem to think Ricky Gervais is on their side because of some jokes he made last night at the #GoldenGlobes, here’s what he said recently when I asked him about becoming more politically engaged,” entertainment journalist Boyd Hilton tweeted on Monday, before introducing a quote in which Gervais criticized President Donald Trump.

Erin Ryan, an op-ed contributor for the left-leaning Daily Beast, insisted that the “right wingers” cheering Gervais were hypocrites.

“ricky gervais’ point that a lot of people in entertainment are hypocrite sell-outs isn’t wrong, but it’s also true that most of the right wingers cheering about his monologue would push their mother down the stairs in order to be invited to sit at the hollywood cool kids’ table,” she tweeted.

Conservatives erupted in praise of Gervais following his Sunday evening hosting performance at the Golden Globes, where he bitingly upbraided elitist liberal hypocrisy.

Gervais did not spare the actors, writers and directors in the room.

“Well, you say you’re woke, but the companies you work for … unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you would call your agent, wouldn’t you?” Gervais said.

At another point, Gervais offered some harsh advice to the nominees, whom he unfavorably compared to teen climate activist Greta Thunberg.

“So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech, right?” he said. “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”

By the end of the evening, Gervais had touched on nearly every issue most dear to progressives: climate change, #MeToo, race.

Conservatives hailed Gervais’ performance as the “savage” wake-up call Hollywood desperately needed.

But many liberals couldn’t fathom how conservatives were able to applaud a political figure that doesn’t play for their team.

“You know Gervais thanks you right wing nut jobs are pathetic, right? Surely you know this. Right?” a commenter said in reply to a pro-Gervais post from Daily Wire editor-at-large, Josh Hammer.

“The number of right wing clowns cheering on Ricky Gervais’ Globes monologue, believing that his anti-hollywood rant is anything other than just shtick, is just f***ing hilarious. What a bunch of dumb Ben Shapiro brained buffoons,” tweeted “Veep” actor Usman Ally.

“Gervais is also a classical liberal, as his stance on animal welfare and so many other issues, makes clear. So the fact that right wing truck-nuts jagoffs think he’s one of them, makes the bit Gervais is doing all the more beautiful,” said another commenter.

No we dont think he's one of us. But what makes this beautiful is that he spoke truth to power to a bunch of rich out-of-touch elites who think they know how the real world lives. They are like the obscene elites in Hunger Games. Totally oblivious of their ugliness and hypocrisy.

But several conservative commenters on Twitter said they were well aware of Gervais’ political leanings.

“No we dont think he’s one of us. But what makes this beautiful is that he spoke truth to power to a bunch of rich out-of-touch elites who think they know how the real world lives,” said one such commenter.

“Why do we care what side he’s on? I like seeing all the butt-hurt left spewing their mouths after it. That’s what I like. While they tell us to take it with the Michelle Wolf comedy in 2018, here they are,” tweeted another.

In a tweet that was liked more than 1,000 times, one Twitter user asked if “anyone actually think[s] Gervais is conservative?”

Gervais addressed the controversy head on in a tweet on Monday, saying “How the f*** can teasing huge corporations, and the richest, most privileged people in the world be considered right wing?”
