The line Sund says he comes back to most often makes the case for staying in the game a little longer.
Every goal has a moment when quitting starts to feel easier than continuing. For bestselling author and keynote speaker Chris Sund, that moment is where a great deal of potential quietly gets lost.
“Most people don’t fail,” Sund said. “They leave too early.”
It is the line he says he comes back to most often, and it connects to the message of his book, You Are Capable of More: A No-Excuses Guide to Becoming Your Best Self. It also reflects his personal mission, which is to help as many people as possible become the best version of themselves.
The Gap Between Belief and Follow-Through
To understand why so many people stop short, Sund surveyed more than 200 working adults. Ninety-two percent said they believe they are capable of more than they are doing. Yet 78 percent said they delay action on things that matter to them, and 71 percent said they fall short of their potential daily or weekly. Eighty-five percent said they second-guess themselves because of their own inner voice.
The reasons people gave came in a clear order: self-doubt and fear of failure, then being too busy, then getting comfortable. Sund notes that none of them is about ability. Leaving too early, in other words, is rarely a verdict on talent.
What Staying Looks Like
Sund has seen this play out across more than a decade in healthcare staffing, where he helped build a company from the ground up. The early years meant making big decisions without a playbook, long before anyone could promise they would work out. He also worked through COVID, which turned healthcare staffing into one of the most demanding places to work in the country almost overnight. Hospitals needed clinicians faster than ever, and the ground shifted every week.
What he learned in those moments is that people do not need a perfect plan. They need someone who will make the next decision, own it and keep moving. He brings the same thinking to personal goals. You do not have to have everything figured out to begin. Start where you are, work with what you have and take the next step.
“You didn’t hit your limit. You just found where it used to be.”
That line, from the book, treats the point where many people feel stuck as a marker of how far they have already come.
Tools for the Hard Middle
You Are Capable of More was built to be used, not just read. Through honest personal stories, including his own setbacks, Sund shows readers how to move through self-doubt, take ownership of their choices and build the habits that turn good intentions into progress. Each chapter ends with actions readers can take that day, and a closing Playbook helps them put the lessons to work. Chapters such as Train Your Inner Voice, Time Is Your Edge and The Comfort Ceiling speak directly to the barriers his survey uncovered.
“There is more inside of you than you have been using,” Sund said. “Most of the time the next level is not about learning something new. It is about finally acting on what you already know.”
The book has been well received. Released on August 13, 2026 by Game Changer Publishing, it won the How-To category at the 2026 Paris Book Festival, became an Amazon bestseller, was rated a “Must Read” by Reedsy Discovery and “A Recommended Read” by BookViral, and earned a five-star review from Literary Titan. It has been endorsed by professional athletes, Olympians and bestselling authors.
Free Resources for the Next Step
Sund wants the message to reach people well beyond the readers of the book, which is why You Are Capable of More offers free assessments, articles and resources online. Anyone can use them to take their next step, whether or not they have read the book. For someone close to giving up on a goal, the free assessment can help pinpoint which barriers are actually in the way.
Sund writes for Forbes and Inc. and shares the message from conference stages and on morning TV across the country. He has also been featured in CEO Weekly, US Business News and MSN.
