Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Files for Reelection — Can She Win? – Opinion

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is now running for the second term. Michiganians are thrilled.

The last bit was actually a joke.

You could probably say that her first term was a little bit of a joke but nobody would be truly laughing.

You would only hear muted sobs, and she might try to stop the screaming from getting heard. This is the only way it can be put. Although her first four years were a complete disaster, she still has a chance of being elected.

A WDIV Detroit/Detroit News poll revealed that The HillThe shocking fact that 56 percent of respondents favored the job was covered is a surprise. From that article…

The job done by Witmer was approved of 56.2 percent, up from 48.3 per cent in the fall. A poll of Michigan voters from the most recent period showed 38.7% disapproval, as opposed to 44 percent.

The survey indicated that the improvement in Witmer’s ratings was driven largely by independent voters. Only half of the independent voters disapproved of Witmer’s performance in September 2020. This figure was lower than 27.9% in the most recent poll.

According to WDIV, Whitmer’s approval rating among independents has increased by 45 points, from minus 1 percent to plus 34.4%.

Whitmer’s past has been a subject of many missteps, as I’ve documented here in the last two years. Below are some of my articles from this period.

Michigan Legislature Eliminates Whitmer Emergency Power Law and She Can’t Veto.

From the last article above, from July 2021…

House Republicans today approved the citizen-driven Unlock Michigan initiative. This initiative seeks to remove Governor Gretchen Whitmer from the overreaching emergency power of 1945 and any future governors. With today’s veto proof vote and the Senate’s last week, the legislature has officially revoked these emergency powers.

“Today’s vote is a resounding victory for the people of Michigan, who over the past year, suffered needlessly under Governor Whitmer’s abuse of the 1945 Emergency Powers which she used to impose some of the most restrictive COVID rules in the nation,” said Eric Ventimiglia, executive director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “Thanks to the work of Republicans in the legislature and hundreds of thousands of Michiganders who took part in the Unlock Michigan initiative, Michigan will never again allow Whitmer or future governors to wield unilateral and unchecked power over the people of our state.”

The repeal of the 1945 Emergency Powers of the Governor Act turns the page on a dark period in Michigan’s history, which saw the Governor seize unprecedented power in the name of public health. After nearly a year of tireless work, every day Michigan citizens collected enough signatures in the “Unlock Michigan” initiative to force the veto proof vote in the legislature repealing the law

Gov. Gretch and her staff were in dire straits in 2021 before one her Emergency Power Laws, thrown over the Mackinac Bridge in 2023, was removed. This came on the heels of her sneaking off in private jets to go visit her dad in Florida and to the Biden inauguration during the lockdowns here — and citizens being fined for not obeying her orders.

After her emergency power was revoked she stopped cheerleading that all Michigan should follow the confusing and ever-changing CDC guidelines. People started to return to normal. Contrary to her authoritarian Democratic Governors who continued pressing for mandates.

This is what I believe accounts for her increase in approval in the poll.

According to WXYZ.com,She wanted to move on from all of the horrible things that have happened in her announcement.

However, the governor avoided talking about partisan disputes with the GOP-controlled Legislature. This blocked her plan for an increase in the gasoline tax to fix the roads. Later she fiercely opposed COVID-19 orders closing schools and businesses.

She emphasized how the bills she signs are bipartisan, including laws to land General Motors’ largest-ever investment, cut business taxes, boost education spending and provide $400 per-vehicle auto insurance refunds.

“Despite all the challenges, we are making real progress while the Michigan economy continues to get stronger,” she said.

Still, the GOP must pick someone against her. That contest is expected to heat up soon. There is no way to know who will face her in November. But, we hope that people are reminded how awful the job was done over these past three and a half years.

Will she be reelected? Yup. This is the state I have known all my life. It has seen some very stupid political events.

However, the political headwinds are against her, and with a crop of impressive candidates looking to face off against her, this race could break open wide for her defeat in the blink of an eye — instead of getting poked in the eye politically, like we have the past four years.
