Is This Really CNN? Cillizza Gives Biden, Harris ‘Coal’ for Christmas, Praises DeSantis

CNN must have something going on. They gave more brutal, accurate assessments today as well as yesterday and they did not continue to suck up to Biden’s administration. On Christmas Eve, Chris Cillizza did a segment on Day of the New where he gave “coal” to both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and gave a candy cane to the media-maligned….Ron DeSantis?!

Cillizza’s lighthearted segment started off with the politicians on the naughty list, starting with the President and Vice President. He admitted Biden had a “tough year” though he omitted detailing most of his failures like Afghanistan:

First, Joe Biden. Joe Biden started 2021 in high 50s with his approval rating. Looks like he has the coronavirus under control. The economy is recovering. With Omicron still raging and his approval rating at the low 40s, he ends the year. There are some positive signs about the economy. The president had a tough year overall. So coal.

He also gave Kamala, “coal” for “Adapting is difficult” to the Vice President role. That’s the understatement of the year. The segment before this one was with New York Times’ Zolan Kanno-Youngs, Day of the New had spent more time on Harris’s struggles but blamed sexism and racism at one point too. Pretty soft criticism but hey it’s CNN. At least they acknowledged it’s not been a good year for the new administration.

More remarkable, he even gave West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin candy canes as a gift to Ron DeSantis (Florida Governor)

Cillizza pointed out that DeSantis is very popular among Republicans, which he was competing for the top spot in 2020.

Ron DeSantis, on the other hand, I believe gets a candycane. As you can see, I feel like my Twitter feed explodes because many hate Ron Desantis especially Democrats. Here’s what I’ll say. I’m talking about what Ron DeSantis’s goals were at the start of the year and what the end of the year looks like. He is interested in running for President. It has been an excellent year for him in terms of generating support and loyalty within Republican party. Donald Trump takes notice.

But of course his assessment of Manchin was also a criticism from the far left that he holds too much power:

Joe Manchin is undisputedly the most powerful US senator, regardless of whether you agree with him or not. Some would say that he has the same power and authority as President Obama in terms of advancing the legislative agenda. Joe Manchin opposed the Build Back Better Bill. The Build Back Better Act is not available. Joe Manchin is the only person who will pass any bill to increase social safety spending. This makes him as powerful as ever.

Now before you assume Cillizza had a bit too much to imbibe at the office Christmas party, he did revert back to CNN’s usual obnoxious ways the rest of the segment.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican party’s leader, also received coal. But Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg got candy canes. Charlie Baker, an anti-Trump Republican governor and secretary of transportation got them.

CNN’s Day of the New

12/24/21

7:15 am

JIM SCIUTO: 2021 was quite busy for Washington. It’s hard to argue with that. Let’s get into the spirit of Christmas and take a look at who gets coal in their stockings. And who gets the other, which, according to our lawyers, is candy canes. CNN politics Chris Cillizza, Santa himself, is present. We want to finish on a positive note so let’s get started with the negative stuff. This year, who is buying coal?

CILLIZZA – Jim, my long white mane was missing for the full Santa effect. We’ll start with Zolan. First, Joe Biden. Joe Biden started 2021 in high 50s with his approval rating. Looks like he has the coronavirus under control. The economy is recovering. His approval rating is in the 40s as Omicron is still rampant. There are some positive signs about the economy. The president had a tough year overall. So coal.

Kamala Harris will be included in the category of coal. It’s for a lot of the reasons that Zolan and Erica just talked about. As everyone has, I believe she struggled with adapting to the tae position. It isn’t uncommon. This is the role of vice president. She has probably struggled, I believe. Biden is a bit older than I thought. Are they running him again? This complicates the matter. Mitch McConnell, the other candidate for coal. I say this not because he had an unsuccessful legislative year or anything like that it’s because he has become target number one for Donald Trump. Donald Trump refers to him as the “old crow”. He attacks him. He’s trying to get someone else to challenge him in the Senate. Mitch McConnell’s number 2, John Thune is reportedly thinking about walking away from politics. McConnell could also suffer from that. This is the Republican party within the coal category. This party is currently led and organized by someone who claims the 2020 election was stolen. This is something we cannot forget. This is more than just arguing that it was stolen. He’s working to get people in lower-ranking offices, such as secretaries of state and secretaries of government, who support the notion of the election being stolen, which could in turn reverse the outcome in 2024. This is something that we should not forget. These are my four coals.

SCIUTTO. It’s not a coincidence that Mitch McConnell stands up against the great lie. Candy canes. Which one is receiving the sweet stuff?

CILLIZZA:  I do like you–I can tell you have kids. You’re like me. Give them the broccoli first, and then the candy last.

SCIUTTO: Yeah.

CILLIZZA:  First, candy cane Pete Buttigieg. Simple for me. He has enjoyed a great year, and he’s now promoting the greatest thing Joe Biden did for Democrats: the infrastructure package. It’s getting great reviews and he is out selling it. In fairness, Kamala Harris doesn’t get good reviews while Pete Buttigieg is receiving good reviews. These two axis are the foundation of the future for the Democratic party. When one of them goes up, then the other is a little lower, as Buttigieg.

DeSantis has enjoyed a great year of generating support and loyalty in the Republican Party. Donald Trump seems to be taking note and trying to fire back at DeSantis by saying, “hey, if he’s running, he better stop being running.” DeSantis. The third, talk about the explosion of your Twitter feed. Joe Manchin. Here’s why. Many people argue that Joe Manchin has equal power to the President of the United States when it comes putting together the legislative agenda. Joe Manchin opposed the Build Back Better Bill. The Build Back Better Act is not available. Joe Manchin is the only person who will pass any bill to increase social safety spending. This makes him as powerful as ever.

CILLIZZA Charlie Baker is either the most beloved or the second-most popular governor of the United States. This is quite remarkable. It is remarkable that he is a Republican living in one the most democratic countries in America. He decided to retire because he is sick of Trump’s Republican party. He was the guy who voted in 2020 and 2016 without registering. This is the perfect example of Republican Party leadership. This guy doesn’t seem to be good for the party. This is a great feat and he should be recognized. It was almost time to run out of candycanes.

SCIUTTO, I understand you. He is going home with a candycane.

CILLIZZA : CILLIZZA: He is. That’s why Republicans receive the coal. Again, it’s because the people who should have been Liz Cheneys Adam Kinzinger, Charlie Baker and others who demonstrated leadership during an attempted overthrow of an impartial election are departing. This means that the party is consolidated around this big lie. That is hugely problematic. This is not only for the party, but for the entire country.
