Boris Johnson, the U.K. Prime Minster, announced Wednesday that almost all COVID restrictions would be lifted by his government.
British citizens are no longer required to wear masks everywhere and all work-from home policies will be removed starting next week. Johnson indicated that self-isolation and quarantine policies, which expire March 31, may be repealed even earlier. These comments come as Omicron variant scientists suggest that it has exceeded its national peak.
Johnson states that vaccines and boosters are effective enough to make the United Kingdom an endemic country.
“Because of the extraordinary booster campaign, together with the way the public have responded to the Plan B measures, we can return to Plan A in England and allow Plan B regulations to expire as a result from the start of Thursday next week.”
‘Plan A’ involves a looser approach that relies more heavily on self-care and self-quarantining, as well as booster campaigns and tighter border controls.
Johnson said also that COVID-19 passes were ending. However, individual businesses may continue using them if necessary.
