The University of California, Berkeley announced Friday that the man suspected of perpetrating an assault on a conservative college student, which sparked a nationwide outcry after video footage of the attack went viral, has been arrested.
According to a Campus Reform report, the suspect, 28-year-old Zachary Greenberg, was once employed by UC-Berkeley and “briefly” attended the school as a non-degree seeking student. Diana Harvey, a UC-Berkeley spokeswoman, told Campus Reform that Greenberg worked as a university lab assistant in the psychology department from May to July of 2010.
Greenberg was caught on camera in late-February confronting conservative activist and Turning Point USA volunteer Hayden Williams. Their encounter quickly turned violent, with Greenberg violently attacking and sucker punching Williams.

Greenberg was apparently angered by signs Williams was displaying that read, “Hate Crimes Hoaxes Hurt Real Victims,” a reference to developments in the Jussie Smollett case. The irony of Williams becoming a “real victim” was not lost on many conservatives, who have argued that liberal hysteria over a purported hate crime epidemic is overblown.
Many on the right, accuse the media of playing up incidents that fit a progressive narrative in which America is rife with bigotry and the violent oppression of marginalized minorities, all while ignoring or suppressing evidence to the contrary. Some conservatives have pointed to the media coverage of the assault on Williams, especially when compared to initial coverage of the alleged hate crime on Smollett, as “exhibit A.”
“While Smollett’s tale turned out to be too good to be true, at least for those with a deeply cynical view of America, Hayden’s story, of course, was not,” Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk wrote in an op-ed for Breitbart. “It was verifiable and credible in every way. You’ll understand, then, why I publicly asked: What would have happened if it had been a MAGA-hat-wearing conservative who attacked a progressive?”
“Of course, the media would have loudly condemned the violence, and rightly so. But they would have also told us with impassioned pleas that it was a byproduct of the toxic and hateful presidency of Donald Trump,” Kirk added. “They would have devoted hours to discussing how we can pull the country back from the brink. There would have also been focused media pressure on local law enforcement demanding answers. This is exactly what the news media should be doing. Instead, there was only a smattering of media outlets, mostly conservative, requesting information and coming up empty.”
