Top 4 Moments of CBS Lamenting Media Mistrust, Blaming the Voters

On the one year anniversary of the violent January 6, 2021 attack on Congress, CBS MorningsAs hosts tried to make it seem that no one has denied elections, they spewed Democratic talk points. The network that cheered election denier Stacey Abrams, the show that regularly trashes conservatives, now wants to know why Americans don’t trust the press.

At one point in the show, co-host Tony Dokoupil asked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer: “Republican elected officials are being blamed. Do they blame the voters or themselves?” Hard to imagine why people don’t trust the media.

CBS MorningsOver 50 minutes was spent on coverage from January 6 to 6. Here are 4 of our favorite moments.

4. Fact Denier Says You Can’t Deny Facts

Co-host Gayle King interviewed Maryland’s moderate Republican Governor, Larry Hogan. After hyping his possible presidential run in 2024, she compared being in the GOP to dysfunctional marital counseling and insisted, “You can’t deny facts.”

The thought of it brought back memories from marital counseling. I remember how different people can view the same issue and create completely separate views. The counselor would say, “But that’s his reality, that’s your reality.” And I would say, “But he’s not telling the truth.” So what happens when people look at the — you can’t deny facts. How does it work when people don’t believe you? Is it possible to shift that mindset? My mind is a mess.

You can’t deny reality? On November 10, 2020, CBS Mornings reporter Mark Strassmann gently asked failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Abrams: “[You]Persisted by 55,000 voters. You don’t believe that the race was stolen and you have never given it up.” How about, “You can’t deny facts?” No, that never came up.

In April of 2020, King coached Abrams on a possible vice presidential run, touting her “great answer.” In June of that year, the host pushed the vice presidency again,  lauding, “Stacey Abrams I hope this is not our last conversation. Something tells me it isn’t.” For more on CBS fawning over fact-denier Abrams, go here.

3. Seriously? Blame Republicans

After talking to a far-left voter who thought that Bernie Sanders had his 2016 nomination stolen from him, as well as a Trump voter who thought that 2020 was stolen, co-host Tony Dokoupil made it clear where he stands: It’s the Republicans who are the real kooks.

Also, I want to emphasize that although we are putting these two voters together it is not equal. Only one party is behind the Capitol attack. One party is responsible for destroying the faith of the 2020 voters. When voters from both parties distrust the system you place the country in an awkward situation. I don’t think we can stay on our feet. This is an extremely dangerous line, and it’s up to us how to get out of it.

2. Why Don’t People Trust Us?

During Wednesday’s show, Dokoupil and analyst Joel Payne lamented that no one trust the press anymore, that there’s no “referee.”

JOEL PAYNE Faith in the media, belief in government. Over the last 20 years, all of these things have been lost.

DOKOUPIL – We are at an important point. It doesn’t appear that there is a referee for American life.. They don’t have faith in Congress. They aren’t confident in the media. Who can then step in?

Americans don’t trust the press because the media has spent several decades attacking every Republican President and conservative as Nazi-loving monsters.

1. Americans may be a little too blame

Finally, Dokoupil interviewed Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and it went about how you’d expect. Instead of blaming Republicans for the situation, Dokoupil suggested that we point the finger at Americans as a whole, instead.

Blaming Republican elected representatives is a common tactic. Are they really to blame or are the voters that they respond to?

DOKOUPIL – There is doubt on both ends of the aisle when you take a look at polls.

CHUCK SCHUMER correct.

DOKOUPIL: And polarization — we don’t come to this place with equal blame. It takes two people to reach this place.

…

DOKOUPIL: Republican elected officials are being blamed. Are they really to blame or are the voters that they respond to?

DOKOUPIL They have hope that the system will recover. We’re not going to put those voters together. However, there is no equivalence on the way to that feeling. Only one party is behind the Capitol attack. One party is responsible for destroying the faith of the 2020 voters. When voters from both parties distrust the system you place the country in an awkward situation. I don’t think we can stay on our feet. That’s an extremely risky line and I have a lot of questions about how to get out.

DOKOUPIL, Joel. I’d like to start with you. Politically, we’re in a place where both sides think that the other is wrong. They also think they are a threat to the country, even immoral. Were we really that far? It is difficult to escape from it.

JOEL PAYNE (English): So many root causes. The interview I did with two voters before I believe indicates some institutional failures. Belief in media, belief in government. All of these things are gone in two decades.

DOKOUPIL – We are at the point when it seems there is no referee in American society. People distrust Congress and the judiciary, as well as the media. Who can take over? There have been people who claim that we’ve seen political violence before. So, what’s the difference?

GAYLE KING: Governor Hogan. We just need to tell it as it is, like you stated. Some people won’t listen to you if you don’t tell the truth. It’s obvious that people already look forward to 2024. What are you thinking of running?

KING The counselor would say, “But that’s his reality, that’s your reality.” And I would say, “But he’s not telling the truth.” So what happens when people look at the — you can’t deny facts. How does it work when people don’t believe you? Is it possible to shift that mindset? My mind is a mess.
