Ukraine flees millions
Which direction will they travel?
You may want to travel to America. Legally, it can be difficult. It is necessary to establish which individuals are eligible to be admitted to the system.
“The line is broken,” explains There are reasonsMatt Welch is the Magazine Editor at Large in my New video.
In America, for example, there is a severe shortage in nurses. However, immigration authorities refuse foreign nurses. An American teenager who is interested in helping to build homes may be eligible for admission, although he will have to wait over 100 years. It’s no wonder that people try to cross the border.
Joe Biden, the President of the United States announced this month that 100,000 Ukrainian refugees would be accepted into America.
“He could snap his fingers and make it 250,000 if he chose,” says Welch, and he should, because “we’re a refugee country, and the people who come here tend to be the best.”
“But they could be the worst,” I point out.
Even the supposed “worst of the worst,” Welch replies, made America better.
This is a reference back to 1980 when Fidel Castro released 100,000 prisoners and encouraged them all to move to America. Some were his political opponents, but most were, as a Miami TV anchor put it, “bums off the streets of Havana — murderers, thieves, perverts, prostitutes.”
Castro thought they would create problems for America.
But “that was wrong,” says Welch. Despite their past problems, “they enriched Miami. They added to the economy and didn’t detract from the people who lived there.” A StudyThe Cuban exodus was clearly evident raised wages of low-skilled Miamians.
America’s immigrant population helped to improve it even though they were trying to kill them and their families. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan eagerly accepted refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia and other countries. Reagan claimed that immigrants are better than us when he ran for office. “They share the same values, the same dream.”
“He was bragging on this as a conservative and American value,” says Welch. “It is no longer a conservative value.”
Today, conservatives are more likely to argue against letting in refugees, saying, as Ann Coulter put it, “Things can turn overnight when you’re bringing in these masses of people from very, very different cultures.” Then she joked, “And make it a hate crime to ask them to assimilate.”
The joke wasn’t completely absurd. Some leftists call asking Latinos to assimilate “racist repression.”
Many Americans are more realistically concerned that immigration will increase crime. However, it is unlikely.
“They commit far less crime than native-born Americans,” Welch points out. He’s right. Native Americans were 11.6% times more likely to be jailed than Afghan immigrants.
“It’s hard for us to process that fact,” says Welch. “It feels like it should be wrong, but it isn’t. People who go to the lengths to get to this country tend to be less criminal than the native-born population.”
“What if they just feed off welfare?” I ask.
“Then they would be the exception,” he responds. Overall, immigrants receive less welfare benefits than native-born Americans.
However, many people still feel afraid when they see large numbers foreigners. When Syrian refugees arrived in Poland, Polish citizens protested.
Now, however, the Ukrainians are welcomed by Poles.
This is sometimes called racism.
“Maybe it is racism,” Welch responds. “But maybe when someone you speak a common language with, and have a common history with … lives right next door, it’s just a different story. Let’s just say they have assimilated an incredible number of refugee families. They’re not sleeping in tents, or in cold camps. They’re staying with people in their apartments!”
This seems to be a positive thing.
America is likely to see many more immigrants soon. Welch believes that more refugees should be allowed in.
“America is an assimilation machine,” he says. “It’s something that we should do more of because we’re really good at it!”
Ich stimme.
Let them all come as long as they are respectful of each other.
