The results of an investigation into the Uvalde Police Department’s response to a deadly school shooting in May were addressed on Tuesday. These shocking and disturbing findings are unacceptable.
RedState’s Monday report revealed that officers responding to the attack had more than tactical weapons. They also carried bullet-proof, ballistic shields. They sat by the school, refusing to move to stop the gunman who killed two teachers and 19 children.
According to Texas DPS officials now, the shooting occurred within 3 minutes. There were enough officers and equipment to exterminate the suspect.

These words contradict everything the Uvalde PD claimed in the wake of the tragedy. Local authorities made wild claims that officers were forced to retreat or lacking the firepower needed to respond. They were false claims, as yesterday’s surveillance video shows. The large group of trained police officers with AR variants and ballistic shields absolutely could have confronted and taken out the single, untrained shooter who wasn’t even wearing body armor.
Texas DPS Director Steve McCraw says teachers — not law enforcement — should be praised for their actions one month ago today. According to McCraw, police have enough firepower and protection for them to react much quicker than they do. Teachers quickly worked to secure the school and rescue lives.

It’s hard to imagine how angry this must make the parents who lost children that day. While it is difficult to imagine what could have happened, this particular situation could have seen a much smaller number of victims if fully-equipped officers would have done their job. According to a witness, a mother who went to school to save her kids, the officers hid in the corridor as shots were ringing in the classroom. And as the Texas DPS made clear with Tuesday’s remarks, those officers never even attempted to open the door. They let the crimes unfold.
This cowardice can’t be swept under the rug. It shouldn’t be protected by claims of qualified immunity either. The former chief of police and the current city councilman responsible for the operation need to face real punishment.
