Schumer on Call to Vote on the Green New Deal: ‘It’s a Sham!’

“This is not a debate. It’s a diversion. It’s a sham!”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday criticized Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plan to force a vote on the Green New Deal.

After the unveiling of the Green New Deal, which was touted heavily by progressive democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, McConnell indicated he planned on forcing a vote on the issue. Knowing that the Green New Deal resolution has virtually no chance of passing the Senate, and confident that most Americans would see the plan as too far-reaching, McConnell’s hope was to put Democrats on the spot with the vote.

Taking to the Senate floor to express his outrage, Schumer blasted Republican colleagues for taking no action on climate change since taking the majority in the chamber five years ago.

“I heard leader McConnell knocking the Green New Deal”, Schumer said. “I would ask the leader — and we’re going to keep asking him — what they would do about climate change,” the minority leader continued.

Schumer expressed his displeasure at McConnell’s call for a vote on the measure.  “The games they’re playing here have no meaning,” he said. “This is not a debate. This is a diversion. It’s a sham!”
