Nancy Pelosi Breaks Silence on Green New Deal: ‘Not What We Hope to Achieve’

“The Green New Deal is not what we hope to achieve.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who in the past has been relatively muted in expressing her thoughts on the much-hyped Green New Deal, made her feelings clear in a new interview with Rolling Stone published Wednesday.

“The Green New Deal is not what we hope to achieve,” she said about the plan that’s been highly-touted by the progressive elements within her party, chiefly Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“Now, in terms of the Green New Deal as conceived, that goes beyond what our charge is. Our charge is about saving the planet,” Pelosi continued. “They have in there things like single-payer and … what is it? Guaranteed income?”

While the California Democrat signaled her support for policies aimed at helping the environment, she was more skeptical of the broader agenda included in Cortez’s version of the plan.

“And then they have, I don’t know if it’s single-payer or Medicare for All,” Pelosi continued. “It’s kind of, like, a broader agenda. All good values, but nonetheless, not what we hope to achieve with this focused, determined, decision-making: You’re either for the planet or you are not. There is no ‘plan B’ for the planet. We have to preserve it, and it is in great jeopardy.”

Since the Green New Deal was unveiled, several Democratic presidential hopefuls have been quick to express their support. Pelosi had been mostly silent on the plan, which she referred to in early February as the “the green dream or whatever they call it” – perhaps a subtle indication of her lukewarm feelings regarding the proposal.

The House Majority Leader’s criticisms of the plan echoed that of Republican colleagues, many of whom have accused Cortez of using climate policy as a pretense for implementing a sweeping socialist agenda.

With the 2020 presidential election fast approaching, Republicans have sought to make the Green New Deal a campaign issue, confident that most Americans will see it as a step too far. At least for now, the leader of the Democrat party seems to agree.
