International media arrived at the Kiev suburb Bucha in April 2nd to be greeted by a scene from a dystopic film. The streets littered with civilian corpses were not only destroyed buildings, but also the destruction of other structures. Further investigation also revealed evidence that war crimes were committed beyond what was reported. prima facieThe case against Putin, his cronies and their plans for an aggressive war has been proven.
Her neighbours in a neat brick house four doors down had been tied hand and foot and killed. A few doors down, territorial defense fighters claimed that they discovered a basement where 18 bodies were found, including women, children and men as young as 14, with their bodies badly mutilated.
…
Two days earlier, Torovik said, he had seen a dog eating a woman’s body that had been left on the ground. The worst happened in the basement.
“We found 18 bodies in there,” he said. “They had been torturing people. Some had their ears chopped off. Other had their teeth extracted. Some of the children were as young as 14 years, while others were adults. They just took the bodies away yesterday.”

Russians claimed Bucha was still in its original condition after they left. They also suggested that the Nazis they were fighting caused the problems. This isn’t a joke; it is actually the position of a government which claims to have civilized Bucha, despite all evidence.
Statement from the Russian Defense Ministry #Bucha, on top of everything else offensive and absurd about it, appears to offer as evidence… vampirism, I guess? pic.twitter.com/Vkm5cbLoaZ

The Russians’ ineptness at responding to crises is evident by this response. As it is illegal, and sometimes fatal, to contradict the official Moscow narrative inside Russia, they are used to just making sh** up. For instance, Ukrainian troops didn’t enter Bucha until March 31, and as late as April 1, the city was still the scene of combat operations to drive out Russian stragglers and looters. Independent media first began to report from Bucha in social media on April 1.
Anyone who is shocked by this or, worse yet, trying to pretend it didn’t happen. This is how the Russian military operates, whether Putin or not.
The Russians attacked a Mariupol theater that was home to civilians. The word “CHILDREN” was printed in Russian in huge white letters outside. This may have been an attempt to deter aerial attacks. Some 300 people in the building were reported killed by Russian bombs on March 16.
However, it’s one thing to use bombs and missiles on civilians. But it is quite another to shoot them in the head. This is a different level of evil — the kind of organized atrocity that Europe has not seen since the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia in 1995. Russia’s “anti-Nazi” operation has led Russian troops to act precisely as the Nazis once did. Russian war criminals will, starting with Putin, face justice that is comparable to the one received by the Nazis in Nuremberg.
It is unfortunately the Russian way to war. It is how Putin’s forces fought in Chechnya and Syria — and before that, how Soviet forces fought in Afghanistan and in central Europe during World War II. In order to force the people into surrender, they committed war crimes. But it hasn’t worked in Ukraine. Russia’s savagery has simply caused the Ukrainians to resist all the harder because they know they are fighting not just for their freedom but for their very survival.
The same story will unfold as other cities that were occupied are freed. Russian soldiers were able to loot without any restraint, and they engaged in murder and rape as their mood suited them. If Ukraine keeps Mariupol, we can expect to see some horrifying images. The Russians led off their assault by openly promising to commit war crimes if the defenders didn’t lay down their arms; see Mariupol Defenders Reject Russian Demand for Surrender Setting up the Largest Siege of a City Since WWII. In Donbas, they are now part of the rear-area operations. Their involvement in massacring victims in Mali and Central African Republic has been proven. They will keep their word.
It is unlikely that the perpetrators behind this terrible crime will be ever held accountable. They are not subject to the same legal standards as Shoigu and Putin. Although they might be subject to travel restrictions or personal sanctions, they are not going to face trial for the crimes.
The second best solution is to record the troops serving in Bucha. Thanks to a massive data breach, we can identify at least 120,000 Russian soldiers and their units of assignment thanks to a hack by “Anonymous.”

Should they be ever able to leave Russia, it is important that soldiers who serve with specific units are arrested. This is also true for Russian officers serving in Ukraine. Each of them is liable for all war crimes that occurred under their command. However, they didn’t investigate or prosecute. As General Yamashita found out, it isn’t even necessary to have been informed about the war crimes to be convicted for committing them.
The Russian Army doesn’t have a professional army. It must be treated as a criminal enterprise and not as if it were.
