“Very few think it is legit.”
More than half of Americans side with President Donald Trump’s assertion that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is a “witch hunt” according to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll released Monday.
According to the poll, 50.3% of Americans agree the Mueller probe is a politically motivated witch hunt, while 46.8% said they disagree. 2.7% chose undecided.

Unsurprisingly, the results of the poll are split down partisan lines. While 86% of Republicans agree the investigation is a “witch hunt”, just 14% of Democrats agree. Perhaps most notably, 54% of independents say they agree with the president.
As to whether the House should begin impeachment proceedings, the results were even more lopsided. 61.7% of respondents said no, while only 40.5% say yes and 9.9% were undecided.
Trump welcomed the news enthusiastically in a Monday morning tweet, bragging that “very few” people think the Mueller investigation is “legit”.
Wow! A Suffolk/USA Today Poll, just out, states, “50% of Americans AGREE that Robert Mueller’s investigation is a Witch Hunt.” @MSNBC Very few think it is legit! We will soon find out?

The new numbers are a stark departure from how voters were feeling just a few months ago. According to a December NPR poll, only 33% of voters agreed that the Mueller probe was a “witch hunt”.
Trump’s ability to persuade voters did not go unnoticed by pollsters.

“Even among people who said they had ‘some’ trust in the Mueller investigation, half agreed with President Trump’s witch-hunt allegation,” director of Suffolk Political Research Center David Paleologos told USA Today after the release of the poll.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to influence the 2016 election. CNN reported last month that the two year-long investigation could come to a close as early as late February, but no official word on when the report will be made available has been released.
Trump maintains that the investigations into him are politically motivated.
