Pathetic! CNN Tries to Spin Terrible Inflation News as ‘Sign of a Really Strong Economy’

CNN can’t help itself. In an effort to help President Joe Biden, CNN spun the news that Americans had experienced their highest inflation rate in almost 40 years into positive news.

In November, the Bureau of Labor Statistics published a shocking report that showed that Consumer Price Index rose 6.8% year over year. The inflation was “even more than expected,” and was the “fastest rate since 1982,” according to CNBC. Christine Romans (CNN Chief Business Correspondent) began coverage of inflation news. CNN Newsroom by initially characterizing it as a “gut punch that feels like it really peaked there,” and “the worst in years.” Then came the incredible spin: “Yet, the force is there. This shows that there is an economy in good shape, men. People are rushing out all at the same time to buy the stuff they want after we’ve been in a huge pandemic.” Perhaps Romans didn’t realize that “too many dollars chasing too few goods” is actually a glaring reason why the U.S. is experiencing horrific inflation now.

CNN doesn’t seem to get how spinning a disastrous inflation report to insulate Biden makes the network look even more terrible in light of its own recent reporting. CNN’s Sources of reliability newsletter on Dec. 6 reported that “[t]He White House was not satisfied with how the media covered the economy and the supply chain. He has worked behind-the scenes to change the coverage..” The newsletter, written by senior media reporter Oliver Darcy, said, “Senior White House and admin officials — including NEC Deputy Directors David Kamin and Bharat Ramamurti, along with Ports Envoy John Porcari — have been briefing major newsrooms over the past week.” Darcy even had the audacity to paint the spin sessions as “productive, with anchors and reporters and producers getting to talk with the officials.”

Romans — who is a reporter — trying to “reshape coverage in [Biden’s] favor” makes CNN look like state-run media in light of the White House’s recent meddling with news organizations. The Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics states clearly: “Deny favored treatment to advertisers, donors or any other special interests, and resist internal and external pressure to influence coverage.”

CNN’s attempt to manipulate inflation to help Biden is not unusual. Just recently, CNN did public relations for the president by blaming nearly anything and anyone but Biden’s disastrous economic policies for his poor polling numbers. CNN’s coverage on inflation is like watching Saturday Night Live In 1978, CNN mocked efforts to make inflation seem small-scale. CNN also recently published a story headlined, “Why inflation can actually be good for everyday Americans and bad for rich people.”

The Media Research Center created a compilation of clips from Fox News, Fox Business and conservative radio host Dan Bongino who have been sounding the alarm bells on how dangerous the inflation crisis is for months now.
