“It was politically advantageous for them.”
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ new press secretary Briahna Joy Gray has a history of defending President Donald Trump’s conclusions on Russia.
After her hiring was announced this week by the Sanders campaign, a 2016 tweet from Gray was resurfaced by Twitter commenters. In it, Gray says that “Trump is right” that Democrats’ promotion of the Russian hacking scandal was motivated by politics.
@realDonaldTrump is right. The dems pushed the "Russia did the hacking" angle b/c it was politically advantageous for them. #debatenight

The Russian election meddling controversy started with the 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee’s servers. Democrats claimed Russia was intervening in the election to help Trump, but Trump disputed that conclusion during a presidential debate later that year.

“She said Russia, Russia, Russia, maybe it was. Could also be China,” Trump said of the hacking of the DNC’s servers. “Could also be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds.”
Charges that Russia was behind a plot to derail the Clinton campaign eventually became the current investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow.
Trump has long claimed the Democratic obsession with Russian interference in the election is a politically motivated “witch hunt“.
Despite now working for Sanders, Gray appeared to share Trump’s suspicions.
Defense of Russia is nothing new for those on the far-left of the political spectrum. Glenn Greenwald, founder of the news site The Intercept and Gray’s former employer, has long defied the mainstream Democratic party line on the Russia narrative.
