Trump Says the ‘Twilight Hour of Socialism’ Has Arrived

“The last thing we want in the United States is socialism.”

President Donald Trump expressed his desire for an end to socialism in America during a joint press conference Tuesday alongside Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.

While highlighting the humanitarian crisis plaguing socialist Venezuela, Trump took time to jab at Democrats’ recent embrace of democratic socialism.

“The twilight hour of socialism has arrived in our hemisphere,” Trump said. “The last thing we want in the United States is socialism,” he continued.

Trump also noted that the U.S. is doing well economically, suggesting that the embrace of socialist policies could jeopardize the momentum.

“And hopefully, by the way, it’s also arrived — that twilight hour — in our great country, which is doing better than it’s ever done economically,” Trump said.

Bolsonaro echoed Trump’s comments on Venezuela, saying the two nations could work together to solve the crisis.

“Reestablishing democracy in Venezuela is also a shared interest between our two administrations,” Bolsonaro said.

While Venezuela’s socialist government has had trouble getting a grip on the humanitarian crisis tearing through the nation, prominent Democrats have been reluctant to condemn Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s regime. Instead, many in the party have embraced the democratic socialist ideals outlined by 2016 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Trump has been highly critical of socialist movements in the United States, drawing the ire of Democrats that insist the ideology could be good for the country.
