MSNBC’s Ruhle: Why Isn’t Biden Getting Credit for His ‘Big Wins’?

The Monday night’s The 11th HourMSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle was stumped by President Joe Biden’s “big wins” after she read some key results from the NBC poll.

Ruhle opened the segment with a reading of NBC News’ story about Biden’s approval numbers. “The next headline sounds alarming. Zitat: “Biden’s job approval drops to the lowest level under his presidency, amid inflation fears and war.” Ruhle announced before lecturing middle-class Americans on why they should be thanking Biden despite not being able to afford gas or groceries because of rising inflation:

Let’s give some context to these fears. We’ll start with the facts. United States already sends billions to Ukraine in terms of military and economic aid. There is evidence that economic sanctions have been imposed on Russia to thwart its economy. NATO has never been more united than it is right now. Inflation here is still a problem. However, the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest point in 50 years. And as the American people heal from COVID-19 so too does the economy. However, this isn’t translating into the American voter. According to a new NBC poll, many Americans remain skeptical about Biden’s ability and willingness to properly respond to Ukraine’s crisis. Only 28 percent of Americans say that they feel a lot or a lot more confident than others. Biden has a low overall approval rating. 40% of the people surveyed said they are satisfied with his performance. 55 percent disapprove.

Ruhle then contacted Charlie Sykes of The Bulwark, a Biden-loving Democrat and former Republican to ask why Biden wasn’t. “Reaping the rewards at the polls”Proclamation These are huge wins!

Sykes said to her that Ukrainian voters aren’t focused on war in Ukraine. “focused on inflation, they’re focused on crime, they’re focused on the border and they continue to be worried about mixed messaging on the pandemic.” She was then told by him that Biden is needed “Some sort of a reset”To better understand Americans,

Ruhle was not happy to hear Ruhle’s wailing. Charlie is a reset of who? We are putting COVID behind us, we are in an economic recovery, we are doing a lot to support Ukraine, while we’re not risking the lives of our troops on the ground.” Ruhle kvetched. “What is he going to do to get back on track? And what about the enormous infrastructure bill that was passed?”

Sykes responded that most voters don’t recall the Infrastructure Bill, and this is the reason he’s not getting credit.

Ironic, Ruhle complains about Americans accusing Biden of the poor economic state. However, skyrocketing inflation due to massive government spending such as the infrastructure bill is one reason why the economy appears poor.

STEPHANIE ROHLE: This headline is alarming. Inflation fears and war have led to Biden’s approval of jobs falling to their lowest level. We need to give context to the fears. The American people have also recovered from COVID-19.

Let’s see why. Today’s guest is NBC News reporter and moderator, Washington Week. And Charlie Sykes,  Editor at Large of The Bulwark, and an MSNBC political analyst. Charlie, please explain this to us. Biden is able to cite some of the positive evidence that I have just compiled. Is he not reaping the rewards in the polls, or is that a reason? These are huge wins!

CHARLIE SYKES : In reality, voters don’t care about this. The harsh reality is that this is what voters are focusing on. They’re focused on inflation, they’re focused on crime, they’re focused on the border and they continue to be worried about mixed messaging on the pandemic. And there’s a real danger that Joe Biden is now caught between people who think he is being too tough on Russia and people who think that he’s not doing enough, and amid all of that I think that there has been some muddled messaging. You and I could go on with facts. But we can also see that the Republicans have lost their mind and are acting in bizarre ways. However, at the moment, it seems that Democrats hold power. Joe Biden must come up with a way to reset the system. Use the bully pulpit to reach more Americans in a new way.

RUHLE – But Charlie, a reset?  We are putting COVID behind us, we are in an economic recovery, we are doing a lot to support Ukraine, while we’re not risking the lives of our troops on the ground. He needs to know what he should do to restart, not to mention that the bill for infrastructure was huge.

SYKES, Yes. This is what nobody can remember at the moment. These things are not his fault. This is part of the problem. It’s about perception and reality, and Joe Biden is not involved in much of it. Last year, the Democrats were able to spend a significant amount of time fighting among themselves and discussing whether their agenda was being impeded. So as a result there’s not that wind at his back, where he is the leading figure behind the economic recovery, behind the end of the pandemic. It is his responsibility to speak up about what he has done. He needs to make it more clear.

YAMICHE ALCIINDOR : It really boils down to just two things. Charlie touched upon both. It is perception and messaging. Talking to Democratic pollsters as I have they will tell you that this is down to Democrats rallying behind the President and echoing many of the things the President has said. This poll shows that 38 percent of Americans blame President Biden for inflating gas prices and putting too much faith in him to manage the crisis in Russia. And they are blaming Russia by only 6 percent. Remember that Putin’s price rise has been the White House’s claim. They used those words, and Democrats were frustrated by the situation. I spoke to them and they said that their party needed to increase its efforts to do so.
