Michigan Governor Whitmer Vows to Ignore State Law After SCOTUS Dobbs Decision – Opinion

The fallout from the Supreme Court’s historic decision on Friday that gutted Roe V. WadeThe United States of America continues to resonate.

Michigan was hit hard by the impact of that decision on Friday. Governor Gretchen Whitmer decided, in all of her wisdom and intelligence, to ignore the state law she had been elected enforce.

It’s a very innovative way to govern, I think.

RedState is, as I mentioned in an earlier post, all about the Dobbs decision LaDuke: Your ‘Lump of Cells’ Argument Is a Load of ManureI’ve written numerous times on this blog about Gretchen Whitmer and the work she does in Michigan. This makes me feel like we’re at an intersection in Mitten State. The signs at this intersection are called “Will She” and “Get Away With It.”

This of course is yet to be determined because this is what elections are held for–and with the history of how Republican candidates fare in this state, I have some concerns.

Last week, my opinion was on the GOP candidates. The Michigan Governor’s Race for the Republicans Is Finally Ready to Take Off. I’m hoping this race produces a strong contender to face Whitmer in November.

As I mentioned in my article linked above…

I’m no longer a registered Republican, and declared my Independence and embraced my libertarian streak many years ago. To vote for Michigan Governor, this is the first time I have voted for the GOP. The Republican nominee must win by convincing people like me who are not Republicans nor Democrats to change their mind.

Michigan’s chief executive gave this response to Friday’s decision and gave the GOP a gift on Friday with this statement about Dobbs.

“Today is a sad day for America as an unelected group of conservative judges act squarely against the will of the people and medical expertise. We can all sense the despair that tens of millions of Americans—our neighbors, family members and friends—are feeling right now. However we personally feel about abortion, health—not politics—should drive important medical decisions.

“With today’s decision, Michigan’s antiquated 1931 law banning abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and criminalizing doctors and nurses who provide reproductive care takes effect. A Michigan court temporarily suspended the law but it is still subject to challenge. This law, which was passed in 1931, would penalize women and remove their rights to decide about their bodies. I am deeply disappointed that Michigan’s Republican legislative leaders have been in court defending this draconian ban, to the detriment of women and families. Others have proposed a 10 year sentence for abortion providers, and a 20 year sentence for those manufacturing, selling or distributing contraceptives.

“I want every Michigander to know that I am more determined than ever to protect access to safe, legal abortion. This is the right time to make use of every tool we have to help women and their reproductive health. That is why I filed a lawsuit in April and used my executive authority to urge the Michigan Supreme Court to immediately resolve whether Michigan’s state constitution protects the right to abortion. It is important to make clear that Michigan law protects access to abortion. Additionally, I have issued an executive directive to all state departments and agencies directing them not to work with any authorities in other states to pursue women who seek legal abortion. Also instructing departments to enhance protections to reproductive healthcare.

“I will fight like hell to protect every Michiganders’ right to make decisions about their own body with the advice of a medical professional they trust. I will not give in or give up for my kids, your kids, and the future of our great state.”

It is amazing to see how they managed to find a happy ending that did not mean giving up on their children, and without getting into a puke heap.

Friday’s SCOTUS ruling redirected the issue back to states. This is where the matter should have been since the beginning. Whitmer is suing Michigan to prevent the Michigan law from being applied is fair play.

Yet, let’s not forget Gretchen Whitmer was on the shortlist to be Joe Biden’s Vice President. People who advocate the horrific act of abortion up to birth are supporting this current administration.

There is no indication that the Governor for Michigan doesn’t support this viewpoint. She wants no part of that debate because, along with all the other missteps she is had during her four years, she would be in big trouble with the economy tanking and her handling of Covid-19, plus not fixing the damn roads–and being a supporter of such a grotesque act as abortion until birth.

It has been an awful time for her in Lansing, and she needs to get out of it by next January.
