PolitiFact’s routine tendency to defend President Biden’s accuracy in his public proclamations continued within hours of the Supreme Court’s DobbsDecision on Friday. Biden claimed America was now an “outlier among developed nations” in the world. Madison Czopek and Tom Kertscher claimed this was “Mostly True.”
Their quick summary was:
— The reverse ofRoe V. WadeIt was removed from the U.S. and given to state regulation.
The U.S. is therefore an anomaly among the other countries with laws or court rulings that allow for abortion rights to be granted nationwide.
Their conclusion was:
The U.S. ruling ends the national right for an abortion. This puts it at odds with all other developed countries. The U.S. decision does not remove state laws that allow abortion.
We rate Biden’s statement Mostly True.
That’s funny. Others fact-checkers also found this. Up to FridayAmerica was an outsider. One example is: The Washington PostIn 2017, America became the seventh country to allow abortion upon demand. This included China, North Korea and North Korea. It is the Post was a little surprised and concluded “what is telling that research from both sides of the reproductive rights debate confirm this figure.” Politifact actually links to the Post This article is worth reading.
States have passed restrictions ever since, and even today, States like Mississippi, the one that was heard at Court, propose restrictions comparable to, or even greater, than those in European countries. PolitiFact recognized that Europe wasn’t exactly an oasis of Planned Parenthood.
France: Prevents abortions at will after 12-14 weeks. However, there are exceptions that can be made for mental or economic reasons.
Germany: Restricted elective abortions after 12-14 weeks.
Italy: After 12-14 weeks, restrictions on elective abortions
Canada’s national governments are not as open-minded as they claim. Canada’s abortion lobby notes that provincial governments set gestational limits. This would make it appear as though there are Canadian equivalents of Mississippi. New Brunswick, Manitoba and Newfoundland all have 16 week restrictions, while Yukon, Nunavut, and Prince Edward Island have 13 and 12 weeks respectively.
PolitiFact released a video last year suggesting Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves made a mistake in using this argument. They could find many “health of mother” exceptions which blurred the truth. Sometimes they are PolitiBlur and sometimes PolitiFact.
