Medical School Eyes Hiring ‘Leaders’ Based on Social Justice Views, Teaching Organs Aren’t Gender-Specific – Opinion

If there’s one thing a study of biology needs, it’s the implementation of left-wing politics.

It seems that they believe the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

To overhaul its curriculum, UNC created a social-justice task force in June 2020. UNC’s website announced thusly:

UNC SOM understands how important it is to integrate social justice in our curriculum. We want to help students and trainees improve their health equity and decrease health disparities. We must also create a learning environment that is inclusive and supports diverse learners.

The school is dedicated to those most medical of musts — equity and power:

To achieve their goal, the Task Force employed a variety of approaches and recruited diverse individuals to ensure equity and inclusion. The Task Force recruited a varied group of people, and used a concentric structure for leadership to ensure that power was distributed to all members and ideas could flow freely among them.

In October 2020’s Final Report, the Task Force provided “a list of 42 learning objectives in the area of health disparities, community strategies, bias/stereotyping, cross-cultural communication, use of interpreters, and self-reflection/culture of medicine that it expects medical students to review by graduation.”

It also took the time to confirm the existence of racism intentionally embedded into America’s systems:

[C]Many medical educators and associations are calling on medical schools to acknowledge racism as an emergency. They should also include education about how to combat racism into their curriculum.

UNC is committed to changing society

A curriculum that incorporates antiracist and social justice components into patient care is vital to meet growing state needs.

As a reminder, per CNN, “antiracism” razes the racism of statements such as the following:

  • “We’re all one human race/big happy family.”
  • “I’m colorblind; I don’t care if you’re white, black, yellow, green or purple.”

To hear UNC tell it, the tragedy of George Floyd exposed America’s shame:

The murder of George Floyd and COVID 19 have revealed a continuing reality: race is an extremely serious problem in America. … To navigate this problem, we must continue to address the implications of race in our educational system and history. This challenge will not be met if we do not address it. We will continue to witness and feel the discriminations thatdisproportionately affect those of color.

But how does a medical school fight a nation’s anti-black blight?

The document recommends that those hoping to be hired as “leaders at the UNC SOM” be assessed according to their “growth mindset as it relates to social justice.”

Such a uniform standard will doubtlessly bolster “diversity.”

For another social justice joust, instructors will be trained in “implicit bias, the history of discrimination and racism in the U.S. and their relationship to health and health care, and skills to effectively incorporate issues of discrimination based on race/ethnicity, gender, sex, sexuality, nationality, religion, veteran status, socioeconomic status, body size, and other factors.”

One of the most important parts of this report is about actual organic matter and how it can be defined.

Surely none could refute the connection between George Floyd’s terrible death and this direct response to America’s white supremacy:

Block directors and course directors must update their curricula before the autumn of 2021 in order to stick to these core concepts.

5. Explain the differences between sex, gender, and what they mean. Certain organs or cells are not related to particular genders.

Medicine has recently received a lot of attention in social justice.

The following cases are examples:

Columbia Medical School Launches Workshops on ‘Disrupting Racism’ and Microaggression Management

Medical School Hosts Seminar on ‘Body Terrorism’ Against ‘Fat LGBTQ+ People’

American Medical Association Wokes Up, Cancels Terms Such as ‘Morbidly Obese’ and ‘Inmates’

Mayo Clinic Updates its Dress Policy to Add Pronoun Buttons

A Medical Professor who Supports Hate Crimes may Not be Showing all His Cards

UNC clearly tries to catch up.

These are just a few of the other goals.

  • Each lecture should have a “structural context” section, in addition to basic science and clinical material.
  • It is important to stress that race does not refer only to a biological group.
  • In lectures or small groups discussions, explicitly include antiracism material.
  • Be inclusive of LGBTQI+ languages

This:

All talks addressing health disparities are going to address those disparities, and why they exist.

Which factors might determine the reason? That remains to be seen, but I suspect it won’t be something upon which all of the country agrees.

The times are changing and so is our body.

Long ago, so the legend says, health maladies were thought to be caused by a small dwarf living in one’s stomach.

This was later believed to have been true:

Thanks to modern medicine, we’ve moved past all that.
