Another Tuesday brings another round of primaries. This week, it’s primaries in Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, and Utah, with runoff elections in Mississippi and South Carolina and special elections in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and South Carolina. Here’s what to keep an eye on:
Colorado
Colorado’s US Senate primary features an uncontested Democratic race for incumbent Michael Bennet. On the Republican side, Ron Hanks and Joe O’Dea are facing off.
For the Centennial State, there are eight congressional districts. Only the Fifth, Third and First districts are contested by Democrats. For the Republicans, it’s incumbent Lauren Boebert in the Third District, facing a challenge from Don Coram, while incumbent Ken Buck is challenged by Robert Lewis in the Fourth. There are also contested races in the Fifth, Seventh and Eighth districts.
Jared Polis, the incumbent Democrat governor is being not challenged. Greg Lopez, Heidi Ganahl and Jared Polis are both Republicans that could challenge for the position.
Illinois
In Illinois, Tammy Duckworth’s Senate seat is up for election. In the primary, there is no challenge to the Democrat. On the Republican side of things, however, seven candidates are available.
17 House seats are also up — most notably, the newly (torturously) redrawn 15th District pits current Representatives Rodney Davis and Mary Miller against one another. Donald Trump has supported Miller.
J.B. Pritzker (current Governor) actually has a primary opponent: Democrat Beverly Miles. It has been a hotly contested Republican primary with Richard Irvin & Darren Bailey seen being the top two candidates. Bailey also earned a Trump endorsement.
Mississippi
Mississippi is hosting a Republican runoff in the Second District, between Brian Flowers (Democratic) and Ronald Eller (Republican).
Nebraska
There’s a special election in Nebraska’s First District between Republican Mike Flood and Democrat Patty Brooks, necessitated by the resignation of Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry who, in March, was convicted of lying to the FBI regarding a foreign campaign contribution.
New York
In New York, there’s a gubernatorial primary — one that doesn’t feature a Cuomo! Kathy Hochul is the Democratic nominee for Kathy Hochul. She stepped in after Andrew Cuomo quit last August. The Republican contenders include Rob Astorino and Andrew Giuliani as well as Harry Wilson and Lee Zeldin.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma’s regular Senate primaries have two Republican challengers to incumbent James Lankford, and multiple Democrats are competing. There is also a special Republican primary for the seat vacated by James Inhofe’s pending resignation (in January of 2023). The current Representative Markwayne Mullin will finish at the top of the pile, but could face a runoff in August.
Additionally, there are four House districts that have been contested by Republicans. There is also a gubernatorial primary for Democrats and Republicans. But incumbent Kevin Stitt has the best chance to stay in his seat.
South Carolina
In South Carolina, there’s a runoff for the Democrats for Senate, between Catherine Fleming Bruce and Krystle Matthews.
Utah
Utah senator Mike Lee will face a primary challenge from Republicans Becky Edwards, and Ally Isom for his seat. He will probably win the primary challenge from Republicans Becky Edwards and Ally Isom. However, Evan McMullin (independent) is still in his sights.
Four House districts have contested races. In the Fourth District Burgess Owens takes on Jake Hunsaker.
