The attack was carried out by multiple ballistic missiles, which landed on Erbil (Iraq) base. Amazing video footage is now available online. This attack is far more extensive than previous attacks by militias.
According to current reports, the guided missiles were Fateh110 ballistic missiles. They are believed to have originated from Iran. That seems extremely likely given the explosive explosions.

It is unlikely that the weapons system at issue was used by any Iranian-backed militia, particularly with this accuracy. If these weren’t fired from Syria, and again, the reports are they came from Western Iran, we could be talking about a direct Iranian attack on US forces. It’s probably not a coincidence that this is happening a day after the US and EU suspended negotiations working toward a new JCPOA agreement with Iran.
Although not much information is available, the video shows missiles being fired out of an Iranian base at Tabriz in Azerbaijan. This is the area that was occupied by Iran before the US bases were struck.

If these did come from Iran, from an actual Iranian military base, that’s really bad news for US foreign policy and the prospects of peace. We could be seeing the first moments of a major escalation — not just in the Middle East, but eventually in Ukraine as well, given Iran’s relationship with Russia.
The homefront is unacceptable for the Biden administration’s appeasement towards Iran to pursue a useless nuclear deal. This will be a wake up call. We’ll have to wait and see, but I don’t see how this kind of attack can go unanswered.
