Washington — I’m probably the only conservative in America that wanted Terry McAuliffe winning his lackadaisical bid for governor of Virginia. He was a generous spender. For help, he brought all of the top Democrats Party officials. As unlikely as it was, he even called Vice President Kamala Harris as well as President Joe Biden to help him. The mask he wore was not a mask. He didn’t wear one. He attempted to make the race all about Donald Trump. But Donald was in Florida golfing. He attempted to replicate his opponent’s fleece vest but the result was not satisfactory. He appeared publically tiedless during crucial stages of his campaign. He eventually did put on a tie, but it was a limp one. The tie was a sham.
His opponent with the fleece vest turned out to have been a great candidate. It was his first time running for the high office and everything went well. He chose the correct messages: education, taxation and funding the police, no matter what the objections of the “Woke Folk”. This exposed the ccritical race theory as it really is. The message he sent was clear, not opposing Trump or celebrating him. And let’s face it: Glenn Youngkin impressed most voters by being a kind, nice person who would, even if he failed to win, go back home to Carlyle and earn another bunch of cash. It would not be strange to live with the Youngkins. If the McAuliffes came in to your home, however, you might put it up for sale tomorrow. You could also throw your pet dachshund and your gigantic iguana (the one that you took back secretly from the Caribbean) under your hat. Terry, like many other Democratic politicians isn’t normal.
Youngkin was victorious, McAuliffe was an inept candidate. Terry decided to run an anti-Trump campaign, ignoring everything else. He could not bring up another topic. What about Mike Pence, Richard Nixon, or Spiro Agnew? Trump is not the only problem that Democrats care about. And let’s not forget: most Democratic candidates are similar. It is Youngkin, who is running the campaign against Trump that they cannot understand.
But there’s another. Most Democrats believe they must placate the left. This is what they call the progressive side of the party. They are trained to listen and discern which faction is shouting loudest. Then they will follow their lead.
Joe Biden has been a successful politician because of this. For over fifty years the president of the United States was in politics, and he has always been at the heart of his party. He takes great pride in it. It is a constantly-changing party, however. The 1930s saw it as a heavily Jim Crow party. In the 1960s when Joe arrived, it had become a moderate party. It was briefly a hawkish party under the Kennedys. But as the Kennedys left, the party became more peacefulnik. It is now progressive. Joe has managed to master the shifting center of his party through it all. This is called adaptability leadership. Perhaps tomorrow the nudists will honk the most. Don’t be surprised, if the nudists do so, if Joe shows up dressed and/or undressed differently to press conferences. Democrats refer to Joe’s leadership as his ability to adjust to the changing centre of his party.
My apology to Terry for not being with me the past four years. I thought it would be fun to kick him about a bit. He still boasted in his memoirs about how we met. The American SpectatorBill Clinton is accused of ordering murders of opposition. Terry seemed very proud of the mendacious claims and when we corresponded about them, he appeared to be quite glib. It would have been quite diverting to continue this correspondence while Terry was governor. Now I can see that even his boon friends are not following him. Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton didn’t show up to his party on election night. Where else could they go? It looks grim for Democrats and I suspect they’ll look even worse next year.
