This is another situation in which I can’t figure out if Democrats are stupid, or if they just think those listening to them are stupid. Perhaps the answer, in this case, is “both?”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has just reiterated what must be the dumbest argument about crime rates that progressives use to justify the fact that their politicians are woefully inadequate at handling criminality in their communities. During an appearance on “The Issue Is” podcast, Newsom told host Elex Michaelson that the press had overplayed the significance of San Francisco’s decision to oust woke District Attorney Chesa Boudin. The city’s voters voted to recall Boudin as a result of his soft-on-crime policies that protected criminals more than law-abiding civilians and make people less safe.
Newsom stated that Democrats may bear, but Newsom disagreed.SomeThe real cause of the rise in crime in San Francisco is the red states. He stated:
These same problems are present in many cities across the nation. What’s interesting is how focused we are on a number of California cities. This was an analysis only of 65 cities with high murder rates. California has two cities. L.A. and San Francisco weren’t even on the list. The majority of these cities are located in Republican-controlled states. I mean, you look at the murder rates in the United States of America — this is not to abdicate any of our responsibility here in California — we own it, and we have to take responsibility for doing more, better, but what’s going on with the red state murder problem in America? Eight of the top states with the fastest-growing murder rates in America are Republican states — really nine, when you consider one of those two, happens to be Georgia. That’s a fact. Look at Bakersfield in California. Kern County is California’s murder capital. Kern County. Republican sheriff, Republican D.A., Republican mayors, Kevin McCarthy’s backyard. But that’s not what you’re seeing on the nightly news.
In February, a CBS News report listed cities that have the highest murder rate. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), has also made reference to the report via a tweet, in which she repeated the absurd argument. She wrote:
CBS News reported that seven of America’s Top 10 Deadliest Cities are found in Republican-governed states.
CBS News reports that 7 out of 10 of America’s most dangerous cities are located in Republican-run States.
Follow-up question. Were you among those who applied for a pardon on Jan 6th? I didn’t. https://t.co/MM2goYl7CB

Amanda Marcotte is a journalist activist and writer. SalonAlso, a recent comment was made by another participant:
Journalists justify the misleading “tough on crime” frame by claiming they’re just reporting on what voters believe. But voters don’t know violent crime is worse in red states because the media doesn’t tell them!

If we were to listen to Newsom and his ilk, we might be led to believe the press is treating Democrats unfairly for their inability – or unwillingness – to address criminality in their cities. After all, aren’t Republicans really to blame when all this illegal activity is happening in their states?
These are the types of absurd arguments that work only on people who don’t understand American government. These folks are banking on the possibility that people won’t be able to discern the difference between governance at the state level and the local level.
It is much more important for communities to have a government close to their people than one that is further from them. To put it simply, your mayor has more of an influence on what happens in your city than your state’s governor or the president of the United States. The mayor, the city council and other government officials are responsible for ensuring that there is no crime in major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and Baltimore. They are responsible for protecting residents in these cities.
Gov. Newsom, not Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is responsible in Dallas and Houston for criminality. Sure, state government can support local law enforcement in some instances – but they are not tasked with policing at the city level nor are they in any way in charge of local law enforcement. This isn’t a matter of increased crime rates in red states. It is the fact they are happening in blue cities. People like Newsom know this.
To appeal to the most gullible, however, they’ll continue to tell lies about it. In reality, however, they don’t fool anyone except those who believe what is being taught to them. The truth is that Democrats are responsible for the skyrocketing rates of crime and they will be paying for it in November at the polls.
