Flashback to When MSNBC Hated ‘Odious’ and ‘Toxic’ Liz Cheney

Now that journalists see Liz Cheney as a heroic Joan of Arc, willing to be burned at the political stake, it’s good to sometimes remind everyone of the seething hatred many in the liberal media had for the daughter of Dick Cheney. One such example is the July 17, 2013 edition of MSNBC’sAll In.

Host Chris Hayes raged at the “odious,” “toxic” Republican  who was then running for Senate. Hayes ranted about her father.

Whatever your opinion about Dick Cheney’s father may be, it is important that you allow this to happen. He was honest about how he got into infamy. He is an up-by the bootstraps sort of villain. Liz Cheney however, is the knockoff. This is a legacy case. She represents what affirmative actions for whites who are not privileged enough to be able to take it.

Hayes commented on Cheney’s decision against Republican Mike Enzi to contest the GOP primaries.

There are several things that we need to keep in mind regarding this latest development in Wyoming politics. Cheney is a truly evil presence in American politics.

Liz Cheney is not content to simply argue her position. To rile up the far left, she makes a potent stew out of factless fearmongering propaganda.

Back in 2022, here’s how Hayes trying to square the liberal circle on Cheney appreciation.

CHRIS HAYES: BEFORE THE COMMERCIALBREAK: Here’s a funny fact. Wyoming’s state fish is known as the cutthroat trout. It has to do with Liz Cheney’s 2014 entry into the Senate race. Although I am not certain, it seems appropriate. Do not leave.

[LIZ CHENEY]

HAYES: That, of course, was Liz Cheney, people pleaser, announcing by way of YouTube yesterday she will bow to the great pressure  from the good people of Wyoming and run for the Senate next year. The problem is that there’s no open U.S. Senate Seat in Wyoming for next year. Her current campaign for the seat is being contested by someone of her party. Republican Mike Enzi (Republican) is serving his third term. Yesterday, he announced that he would be running for another term.

[SENATOR MIKE ENZI (R-WY)]

HAYES Cheney is a truly evil presence in American politics.

Liz Cheney is, in particular, responsible for the far-right pressure group that called Justice Department lawyers that were asked to represent Guantanamo prisoners al-Qaeda sympathizers. This same group was also the one that led the charge against Lower Manhattan’s Muslim community center, which has been cleverly but inaccurately referred to by the far right simply as Ground Zero.

In a letter to the President, she wrote that he had “effectively diminished American strength in foreign countries.” She did this just a few months before. In a statement last year she suggested that President Obama was actually working for the Taliban in support of defense cuts.

LIZ CHENEY : President Obama’s actions are something America’s enemies, al-Qaeda and the Taliban have never been able do. It is to eliminate the country’s combat capability.

HAYES Let’s see how she explained back in 2009 the American phenomenon known as birthers.

CHENEY – People don’t like the idea of a President unwilling to stand up for their country abroad.

HAYES – Liz Cheney is not content to simply argue her position. In order to get the attention of far-left political fringes, Cheney makes an inexplicable stew of fearmongering propaganda. She’s also a member of the “global warming faked because snow caucus”.

Whatever your opinion about Dick Cheney’s father may be, it is important that you allow this to happen. He was honest about how he got into infamy. He’s a true down-by-the bootstraps type of villain. Liz Cheney however, is the knockoff. This is a bad example of affirmative action in favor of whites who are not privileged enough. Last year she bought a Wyoming house. As far as anybody could see, her motivation for running is that she’d like to become a U.S. Senator.

Of course, her father will probably be helping her to raise funds with some of his super-rich and powerful friends. To be honest, this race is not worth caring about. It will likely be determined by less people than the ones who did “Gangnam Style” with Psy last fall.

This is what I find fascinating. Liz Cheney’s candidacy is a return of the 200 proof Neoconism to the Republican Party. She’ll be spending the next year playing to a conservative base that has gone increasingly anti-interventionist, a la Rand Paul, in terms of foreign policy. Wyoming’s story is a compelling test case for whether or not the Republican base has the ability to defeat the neocon aristocracy.

Matt Welch is the editor-in chief of Reason and the co-author of The Declaration Of Independence. How Libertarian Politics Could Fix America’s Problems. Liz Cheney represents America’s problems, so I hope that Wyoming’s libertarian streak will be able to defeat her. For me, the best thing about center by politics, and I truly believe it, is that the base of government isn’t nearly as interventionist than the oligarchy of foreign policy. This is a great test case.

Here’s what I found fascinating. The question Liz Cheney asks is: How do you win in a race that you are the establishment’s representative? What is the best way to get the hateful grassroots on your side? The answer to my question is “I’m going out Obama hate anybody.” Right? She is playing that card. This is her argument for why she wants to win this race.
