Facebook has reportedly restricted yet another American conservative politician, North Carolina Mayor BJ Barnes with little explanation other than that the ban is “irreversible.”
Conservative politicians are still being punished by platforms. Barnes has reportedly been “banned from Facebook — twice,” now having lost direct communication with approximately 9,000 followers. “The block came after a post in which Barnes referenced ‘Obiden,’ a term coined by former President Donald Trump when referring to President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama,” McDowell News reported Oct. 28. “Barnes said he suspects terms used by conservatives are often sought out on Facebook by those looking to block posts or accounts.”
McDowell News further reported that “Nearly 9,000 people follow Barnes’ popular Facebook page, which can still be viewed, but has no new posts since early May when Barnes said he was first ‘bumped’ from the social media site.” Barnes commented that “[t]hey blocked me for about a month the first time,” according to McDowell News. Barnes stated that Facebook had not provided a reason for the ban. Facebook reportedly banned Barnes yet again when the governor attempted to make “another page,” and “This time, Facebook sent a message, indicating that the ban was ‘irreversible.’”
Barnes claimed that he was contemplating the possibility of creating a website of his own.
Facebook is known for its history of attacking conservative politicians.
Facebook temporarily suspended Trump’s presidency indefinitely while he called on peace amid the U.S. Capitol Riot on Jan. 6. Trump assured his supporters, “I know your pain. I know your hurt,” but told them “you have to go home now. We have to have peace.” President Trump also said he agreed the election was “fraudulent,” but warned, “we can’t play into the hands of these people.” Zuckerberg declared on Jan. 7 that blocking Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram would be extended indefinitely, as “We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.”
