Rep. Ilhan Omar filed for divorce from husband Ahmed Hirsi on Friday, following allegations that she was having an affair with a political consultant for her campaign.
The 38-year-old Minnesota Democrat made the filing in her home state, the New York Post reported.
Rumors of a tryst between Omar and the also-married Democratic consultant, Tim Mynett, were confirmed by his wife, Dr. Beth Jordan Mynett, in a Washington, D.C., divorce filing. An anonymous source told the Post in September that Omar’s husband is angry that the headline-making development made him “look the fool,” as the Post put it.

When they separated in March, the source said, Hirsi had told the Minnesota Democrat that if she wanted to break up she would have to do it herself.
“I’m surprised he hasn’t filed already,” the source said, adding that Hirsi was “very confused” by the affair allegations but still loved her and wanted to spare their three children from a public divorce battle.

“I’m surprised he hasn’t filed already,” the source said, adding that Hirsi was “very confused” by the affair allegations but still loved her and wanted to spare their three children from a public divorce battle.
In May, Hirsi shared photos on social media of a family vacation to Miami with captions about new beginnings. Omar was notably absent.
“Nothing brings about more positive change than difficulties,” Hirsi captioned one image.
The Ilhan Omar divorce story
During an interview in August with CBS Minnesota, Omar seemed to claim that she and Hirsi were still together and to deny having an affair with Mynett.
“I have no interest in allowing the conversation about my personal life to continue and so I have no desire to discuss it,” Omar said.
However, according to the the source, the couple’s March split is an “open secret” around Minneapolis, with Omar moving into a luxury condo downtown. Around the same time, she was spotted having dinner with Mynett at a California restaurant.
A Post reporter who visited the family’s home in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood said the house appears to be abandoned, with curtains drawn and cobwebs over the front porch.
Meanwhile, Hirsi has been staying with friends, and the kids have been spending time with a grandfather, the source said.

Mynett has also denied the alleged affair. In a counterclaim against his wife, he accused her of waging a smear campaign to “ruin his career” after he decided to end their unhappy marriage.
