CNN Whines Nadler vs. Maloney: Shouldn’t ‘Have Even Happened’ and ‘Nuts’

As part of the Democratic Party primaries in New York Tuesday night, one of the “liberal lions of Manhattan politics,” Representative Carolyn Maloney lost to fellow lion Representative Jerry Nadler after their districts were consolidated and rearranged via a court order. But on that night’s Don’t forget Lemon tonight, the “journalists” of CNN were less than enthused about two big-named Democrats forced to battle it out with one losing their seat entirely.

“Let’s talk about Representative Jerry Nadler. He won decisively over Representative Carolyn Maloney who is going home, after decades of serving New York,” Lemon lamented to CNN political director David Chalian.

Chalian started his remarks by venting. “This is a race that never, really, was expected, or anticipated, or perhaps should have even happened.”

“But the quirk of what happens every ten years in American politics, as districts get drawn, is these two, 30-year veterans, really, liberal lions of Manhattan politics, end up in this race against each other. So, I’m not sure there is a lot to learn here broadly,” he deduced.

But one thing he did find noteworthy was the possibility that a newspaper endorsement could have helped tip the scales in Nadler’s favor:

Even though I won’t say it, I believe that although newspaper endorsements are important, they don’t matter as much to me. New York Times Editorial endorsements in this specific district are still very important. Chuck Schumer’s nomination for Jerry Nadler helped Jerry a lot in this race, no doubt.

Because as John – this district actually has more of Maloney’s district in it – this new district, than it does Nadler’s. But, it’s a decisive victory. Nadler, his former nemesis inside the Democratic Party, clearly outhustled him.

John Avlon, CNN’s senior political analyst and fill in anchor, was clearly bitter about it all and argued that New York should have had a court order to aid Democrats.

Avlon laughed after realizing that Maloney was the last competive general election they ran in 1992. “this race is going to be decided by around 70, 000, 75,000 votes, in a district that’s three-quarters of a million. Right? It is absurd. Because They’re not going to be a competitive general election, let’s be real.”

What he apparently wanted was to help Democrats protect New York’s 10thDistrict, which he considered a more close race

Look at New York-10. To sound like Dan Rather, this is tight as a tick. But I’ll tell you what, if there was ranked-choice voting, that would be totally different. Instead, you’re going to see incumbent, without a general election, decided by couple hundred votes, maybe just over 1000.

“It’s nuts,”Avlon made a conclusion on the subject.

This lamenting for Democrats was made possible because of lucrative sponsorships from Kia and Arby’s. The following links provide their contact information.

CNN’s Don Lemon Tonight

DON LEMON – Let’s discuss representative Jerry Nadler. After decades of service in New York, Carolyn Maloney, he won the election. David, what are you thinking?

DAVID CHALIAN: Well, listen. It is not a race anyone expected or should have anticipated. The quirk in American politics is that every ten years, when districts are drawn, these two 30-year-old veterans, who really are liberal lions in Manhattan politics, find themselves in this race against one another. It’s not clear that there are many lessons to be learnt from these two.

Though I won’t deny it, I believe that endorsements in newspapers matter. New York TimesEditorial endorsements in this specific district are still very important. Chuck Schumer’s nomination for Jerry Nadler helped Jerry a lot in this race, no doubt.

Because as John – this district actually has more of Maloney’s district in it – this new district, than it does Nadler’s. But, it’s a decisive victory. Nadler outwitted his opponent, who is now part of the Democratic Party.

LEMON: John, Extremely low turnout What is the effect of this?

JOHN AVLON : That is the thing that drives me insane about this. Right? Maloney, along with Nadler have represented Manhattan for over 30 years. In 1992, Maloney defeated Bill Greene (a Republican from the East Side), in a race that was the last to be competitive.

These guys are now going to be fighting each other. The Democrats were greedy, and a judge slapped them down, so they ended up in the same district. And this race is going to be decided by around 70, 000, 75,000 votes, in a district that’s three quarters of a million. Right? It is absurd. Let’s face it, there isn’t going to be any general election.

Look at New York-10. To sound like Dan Rather, this is tight as a tick. But I’ll tell you what, if there was ranked-choice voting, that would be totally different. Instead, you’re going to see incumbent, without a general election, decided by couple hundred votes, maybe just over 1000.

LEMON: You’re going to have to – Dan – Dan would say tight as a tick on a pig spine, or something – you’ve got to carry it a little bit further.

AVLON – I’m not a Texas person. But, it’s nuts.
