CNN Tries to Bust ‘Media Misconceptions’ Like Political Bias, ‘Malicious Intent’

On the last so-called “Sources of reliability” of 2021, CNN media apologist Brian Stelter set out to bust some of the “misconceptions” the public had about the media. The misconceptions that needed to be battled included the idea that they have “malicious intent” when they publish fake news and that the media’s political biases were being actively offset internally, resulting in balanced journalism.

Stelter called upon veteran podcaster Mara Schiavocampo to help with this endeavour. “One of the most important is that we lie. A lot of media mistrust exists. This is something I keep hearing all the time,” she lamented when asked what’s the largest misconception.

According to her, there was no “malicious intent” on behalf of the media when they make, what Stelter called, “All Rights Reserved” mistakes. “Most journalists take pride in doing the right thing. It’s extremely shameful for journalists to make mistakes and admit it quickly,” she asserted, chalking most up to “human error.”

But that’s simply not true.

We’ll look more at what they said about political bias shortly, but it’s important when looking at the kinds of mistakes that get made. Take a look at Trump years. In a rush to denigrate him, the liberal media printed countless false stories and they had to be retract.

A short time later, Schiavocampo wanted to bust the misconception that “political bias” harmed reporting. She couldn’t hide from the fact that media were indeed bias, but according to her, she hears people say “The media are too conservative and too right-wing,” in addition to “this group is all liberal.”

And in giving example of known political bias, she couldn’t bring herself at admit all of MSNBC was radically liberal. Instead she said: “The public is well aware that Fox tends to be right-leaning. They also know that Joy Ann Reid, MSNBC, is proudly progressive.”

If that wasn’t ridiculous enough, Schiavocampo went on to suggest individual journalists overcompensated for their personal bias and gave more coverage and more favorable coverage to the other side:

What’s really ironic about that is that journalists are aware of our own political biases. Human beings are not machines. And so, often we’ll overcompensate when we know we’re covering something were we have a little bit skin in the game, a little bit of emotional attachment, We’ll compensate to ensure that the opposing side gets adequate coverage..

“Therefore, I believe that even if we have a political bias it is the opposite view that benefits because we try to overcome our human impulses,” she added.

MARA SCHIAVOCAMPO:  The single most one is we are lying. It’s not uncommon for media to mistrust. This is something I keep hearing all the time. And here’s what I would love to correct about he that misperception. Humans are flawed. Humans make mistakes. So most often, when someone says to me the media’s lying and they point to an example, what they’re pointing to is an example of a mistake, not an intentional lie.

No malicious intent is shown by us. Most journalists take pride in doing the right thing. And it’s tremendously shameful to make a mistake—

STELTER: Yes! Yes,

SCHIAVOCAMPO — They are very quick to admit it.

Therefore, mistakes are usually caused by human error. Bad sources are being used, or you’re just moving too quickly. You have too many cooks in your kitchen. You’re playing a game of–

STELTER: To many cooks in the Kitchen?

SCHIAVOCAMPO – If you work with a larger group. So, you either have a producer in your field or multiple producers out there. Someone’s calling this government official, someone’s doing this. Next, you start playing telephone with information gathering. And you’re working against deadlines. There are always mistakes. Humans are all flawed.

Our goal is to do it correctly and be the first. And when mistakes are made it’s actually very embarrassing.

STELTER: It’s not always innocuous, though. Right? Because of the chaos in the work flow, it is possible to have 4 editors at once.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: Absolutely.

Here’s the beauty of the space that we’re in today is that we really know the political biases of most of the outlets we’re looking at and we know the ones straight down the middle. The public, for instance, knows Fox is conservative and MSNBC’s Joy Ann Reid is proud to be a progressive. They also know about the media outlets they consider to be middle-class.

What’s really ironic about that is that journalists are aware of our own political biases. Humans are not machines. And so, often we’ll overcompensate when we know we’re covering something were we have a little bit skin in the game, a little bit of emotional attachment, we’ll overcompensate to make sure the other side really gets a fair amount of coverage and really gets explained properly.

According to me, when there is a political bias in our world, the opposite view actually benefits because it counters our human instincts.
