China’s leading video game studio is rapidly gaining power in a world-famous video game company.
Earlier in the month, Reuters exclusively reported that Tencent, the communist country’s largest video game studio, is acquiring a greater stake in Ubisoft. Ubisoft is a French studio behind the famous Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six franchises:
“China’s largest social network and gaming firm, which bought a 5% stake in Ubisoft in 2018, has reached out to the French firm’s founding Guillemot family and expressed interest in increasing its stake in the firm, the sources said.
It is not clear how much more Tencent wants to own in Ubisoft, valued at $5.3 billion, but Tencent aims to become the single largest shareholder of the French company with an additional stake purchase, two of the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.”
The move is part of the communist country’s bid to gain more control over technology companies around the world.
Last year, NewsBusters reported that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, sold a stake to WangTouZhongWen Technology, a Beijing company owned by three state entities in China.
The platform’s privacy policy gave the company unlimited amounts of user data.
“We may share all of the information we collect with a parent, subsidiary, or other affiliate of our corporate group,” the TikTok policy said.
Senator Josh Hawley (Republican from Missouri) introduced the No TikTok on Government Devices Act 2021 in an effort to prohibit federal employees using the app.
Hawley said that TikTok is “a Trojan horse for the Chinese Communist Party that has no place on government devices—or any American devices, for that matter” in a statement.
He added: “TikTok has repeatedly proven itself to be a malicious actor[,]But Joe Biden, Big Tech and others refuse to seriously consider the Chinese threat of espionage. It’s time for Congress to act.”
