Catholic College Professor Probes His School for Professions of #Pride – Opinion

Pride is a universal concept in 2022. Amid an era of “Holiday parties,” perhaps Pride Month is America’s new Christmas.

In honor of June’s LGBT extravaganza, a Massachusetts Jesuit college instructor recently videoed himself searching the school premises for #Pride.

At earlier points in our country’s religious history, Professor Andre Isaacs’s probe would’ve concluded without much to show.

But these days — at the College of the Holy Cross — there’s plenty color on display:

The school’s chemistry department is taught by Dr. Andre. In April, he was profiled by C&En: Chemical & Engineering News:

The frame features a tall and thin Black man. He’s in a chemistry lab and is wearing a tie-dye rainbow lab coat. He points to a machine, and dances from one side to the other. The video is captioned, “Seducing our $550K NMR 4 good data on NYE.” He did, in fact, get good data.

Andre Isaacs is the dancing scientist. He’s a big star of TikTok’s science, technology and engineering (@drdre4000) side with almost 355,000 followers. He’s also a chemistry professor at the College of the Holy Cross. Isaacs is a mentor for future scientists, and he advocates for lesbian students on campus and social media.

Per C&En, “Isaac’s colleagues describe him as a first-rate chemist.”

He’s a first-rate influencer, too:

He…cofounded Outfront, an LGBTQIA+ faculty and staff alliance, after being hired by Holy Cross in 2012. This organization supports and advocates for LGBTQIA+ student and staff, and raises their visibility on campus. “We are at a very queer Jesuit Catholic institution,” Isaacs says. “We queered up this space.”

According to its HolyCross.edu webpage, Outfront’s aims are as follows:

  • Staff and faculty of LGBTQIA+ should be supported and encouraged.
  • Encourage a lively social group of LGBTQIA+ faculty members and staff.
  • Encourage campus dialogue and education about LGBTQIA+ topics.
  • Create an academic network and professional network to support those who are involved in LGBTQIA+ scholarship, mentoring, service and support.
  • Advocate on behalf of LGBTQIA+ staff and faculty on campus. This includes issues like employment discrimination and access to specialized resource. It also focuses on fostering safe, welcoming workplaces.
  • Keep in touch with Pride Student Group and the LGBTQ Alumni Network and work together on programming.

Pride, as we have already mentioned, has become ingrained in American culture. And it’s being increasingly accepted in the arena of faith:

Each religious organization may not offer the same LGBT acceptance. Robert J. McManus, a Massachusetts bishop, recently excommunicated Catholic Nativity School of Worcestor because it refused to take down Pride flags, among others.

Still, American Christianity’s course seems clear.

Putting faith aside, perhaps no better example of Pride’s reach is a new LGBT high school. The first of its kind, it’s located in Birmingham, Alabama:

The Christian college seems to be in sync with Holy Cross.

For a very long time, pride — of any sort — was considered a “deadly” sin. But religion is being remodeled, and the colossal structure known as Catholicism isn’t untouched.
