There is a chance, albeit very slim, that tonight could be the beginning of the Canadian “La Resistance” in the Canadian Parliament to end the authoritarian itch that Justin Trudeau has been scratching really hard the past week. You may think that this analogy is a bit gross but when compared to how Trudeau has unleashed the power of the Canadian government on its citizens, it’s quite fitting.
RedState has been following this story from the beginning, with admiration as well as zeal. Despite our borders, there are many things that make us different. One of those ways is just how gosh darn peaceful these protestors have been for over three weeks — no Target has been looted even once. Another difference is the way the Canadians are turning the other cheek, as Trudeau forces have punched them for holding signs asking for the removal of the mandates.
Americans don’t like getting hit, and they won’t smile about it.
Now, I’m not throwing shade at our cousins to the north of the border with this statement. Canada was created around the same period that King George told us to stop telling him what we wanted. Their boiling point has always been higher than that of us Yankees. Here in the USA, political issues tend to boil very quickly.
My friend Nick Arama has covered this story quite extensively and yesterday wrote this — Canada: Crackdown sparks even more massive protests — about the protestors’ spirit not being broken. From that article…
Trudeau claimed that the Act was an excuse to end the blockades. Meanwhile, the government has moved on to seizing all kinds of power including conscription of tow truck drivers and seizing bank accounts of people for the “crime” of political opinion. As we noted earlier, the police chief even said they would continue to hunt the protesters — and their finances- down, even after the protests. Trudeau made it clear that part of this — from the very beginning — was because they had “unacceptable views” and that he was cool with kneeling with BLM protesters — just not these guys about whom he has lied so much.
Trudeau is clear in his decision to grant himself these powers. The House of Commons of Canada tonight will decide whether or not to approve this act. One of Canada’s liberty watchdogs groups just came out this morning asking that the members of Parliament reject giving Trudeau the yes votes he needs to continue this grab of power.
According to the statement, Canadian Civil Liberties Association, they make it clear they are not fans of this ill-advised maneuver by Hair Gel Trudeau. From that press release…
Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), is urging the federal government not to revoke its emergency declaration. If the government does not respond, a vote will be held on Monday at 8 pm. The CCLA urges all parties to oppose the motion or, at a minimum, to allow individual legislators to exercise their right to vote as they see fit.
“The government’s own proclamation of emergency was clear: they claimed that they needed to invoke the extraordinary Emergencies Act to deal with the blockades. These blockades have been removed. The sweeping national emergency powers they enacted should be dismantled as well,” said Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, Executive Director and General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
“Whether the Emergencies Act should have been invoked in the first place is a fundamentally important question that will continued to be discussed, both in the legislature and in the courts. However, parliamentarians should not be asking whether the government justified issuing a proclamation declaring an emergency one week ago. The question is not whether the proclamation of emergency was justified a week ago, but whether it continues to be valid today. The clear answer, in our view, is no.”
“At this time, the proper course of action for the government is to revoke the declaration of emergency. If they do not, parliamentarians will have to vote in the House of Commons on whether the emergency proclamation is to be rescinded. We would urge them to vote against the proclamation and are asking all parties to allow a free vote so that every elected representative is able to vote their conscience.”
We have compiled some information here on the contents of this press release.
Trudeau currently does not have the majority of House seats. According to WikiAlthough the Liberal Party holds 160 seats in Parliament, it still needs 170 for an overwhelming majority. To get the 170 votes needed to be Prime Minister, he was forced to join forces with other parties.
It is expected that Trudeau’s motion will be approved, but the parties with which he has formed the coalition are further left than Trudeau. C.C.L.A. made a unique plea here.
CCLA asks that all parties vote against this motion. Or at a minimum allow legislators to vote as they see fit.
This could lead to the current government falling apart if party leaders allow their members to express their conscience. This is commonplace in Parliament-style governments and means that tonight’s vote could be the beginning of the end of Son of Castro’s Pierre’s disastrous reign in Canada.
As I said earlier, the parties that did join to give Trudeau the Prime Ministers’ chair last year are farther to the left than the Liberal Party and who knows how they could vote tonight? Are they able to see the danger in allowing a Conservative P.M. to take their assets for protesting against government and come to terms with it? They might just be hesitant to do anything, fearing Trudeau will come after them.
This will all be revealed tonight, and the Canadian people are entitled to better than this. It is my hope that they will realize this sooner than later.
