Dr. Vivek Murthy demanded that Big Tech platforms turn over “misinformation” about COVID-19.
The companies have to turn over the sources of the so-called “misinformation” by May 2.
“Technology companies now have the opportunity to be open and transparent with the American people about the misinformation on their platforms,” Dr. Murthy told The New York Times. “This is about protecting the nation’s health.”
Murthy also asked healthcare providers to turn over information related to the negative effects of “misinformation” about COVID-19.
“We’re asking anyone with relevant insights — from original research and data sets to personal stories that speak to the role of misinformation in public health — to share them with us,” Dr. Murthy said.
Murthy’s referred to this action as a “request,” while The Times four times referred to it as a “demand.”
His “requests” have had consequences in the past.
Last year after Murthy demanded that platforms do more to combat the “misinformation,” YouTube suspended Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) After he stated that most masks you can buy over-the-counter have no value, he was suspended by YouTube. Paul, who is a physician, was making reference to inefficacy and poor quality cloth masks.
Based on Reason MagazinePaul was endorsed by the CDC who stated that properly fitted respirators offer the best protection, while loosely woven cloth products are the most protective.
