On Sunday, ABC’s This Week was caught off guard with the news that Democratic Senator Joe Manchin (WV) is a “firm no” on the passage of President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” bill.
During a panel discussion on the Biden Administration’s plummeting approval numbers, fill-in host and chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl was left to break the bad news to the left-leaning panel which consisted of the CEO of Democracy for America, Yvette Simpson, Politico Playbook co-author Rachael Bade, Washington PostRobert Costa is the Political Reporter, Sarah Isgur, Sarah Isgur, is Sarah Isgur’s lone right-winger at Dispatch: Sarah Isgur has “Some breaking news” Senator Manchin just stated that he opposes this bill.
In response to that devastating news for the leftists on the so-called “powerhouse roundtable,” at least one audible sigh can be heard. Although it’s not clear from where it came, Karl captured it.
Karl broke the news to Bade and remembered that Bade had predicted she would be able to pass legislation “not as a matter of whether, but when.” How do you feel now? Rachel Bade replied clearly to Karl, saying, “It’s time for us to reconsider that prognosis.” They clearly have a problem with a variety of issues.
They lost what was their most powerful force to accomplish this. Chuck Schumer in Congress set the December deadline. That meant that, if you want lawmakers to move something forward, they need to bump it right up against holidays. This often clears the deck and allows for progress. That didn’t work. The expiration of an enhanced child tax credit, which was due to end in the next election year, didn’t work either. Democrats saw it as something that they needed to pass in order to continue the child tax credit. This was during an election year where they face you know an uphill fight. Joe Manchin then just said that he doesn’t support Build Back Better. Look, this guy has an ideology problem spending $2 trillion when there is $30 trillion of debt and inflation at 40 years highs. This will be a problem. I think he has issues with the bill’s structure and that it cannot be passed as is.
Bade also admitted that they might need to totally overhaul the item, but she said it was not clear what or when. Bade admitted it too. “Democrats, they have a huge political problem here”Because they failed to live up to their campaign promises. Noting that they have been “overselling.”
One can always tell someone’s true colors by seeing how they react to news when they’re hearing it for the first time. The panel clearly was upset by Joe Manchin’s news and how they reacted to it.

(audible sighs by panel).
KARL Now, what do you think?
RACHAEL BADE: Yes. That’s what I meant. I believe it is time to reconsider that prognosis. There are a few issues that they have to address. They lost what was their most powerful force to accomplish this. Chuck Schumer had set a Christmas deadline in Congress. This meant that lawmakers could bump up their bills right up to the holidays if they want something to happen. Often, this clears up the situation and helps get things done. That didn’t work. The expiration of an enhanced child tax credit, which was due to end in the next election year, didn’t work either. Democrats understood that this was something they had the need to pass in order for American children to receive their child tax credits. It’s an extremely difficult task, especially when you consider Joe Manchin’s no on Build Back Better. Look, this guy has an ideology problem spending $2 trillion when there is $30 trillion of debt and inflation at 40 years highs. This will be a problem. There are problems with the bill’s structure and I don’t think it will pass in its current form. This bill might need to be completely reworked. We don’t know how it will look or when it will happen.

BADE: Democrats have a major political problem. They have been selling or saying they could pass the bill for years. Joe Manchin now says that he doesn’t have the money to fund education, healthcare and climate change. He might get his way, and rework the bill. We may actually see a bill which does some of these things but not all. The Democrats specifically designed this bill to fund only these programs for two years. But they can do whatever they want. However, he says that he isn’t willing to do this. The base will be really affected if he chooses only one or two. Democrats keep telling their base that they are going to get it done. This could lower voter turnout in an election season. When they’re already facing this uphill battle to keep the House and the Senate. This is a serious problem.
