After Racism Backlash for Criticizing Joy Reid, Did Sarah Silverman Learn Something? – Opinion

After the news that Governor. Ron DeSantis had been looking to restore Florida’s State Guard. Allegations flowed that DeSantis was starting his own “militia” in order to act as “Trump’s red army.”

That evening, MSNBC’s Joy Reid took to the air to deliver this deluded segment in which she proclaimed the Florida governor an authoritarian as Florida AG Commissioner (and prospective DeSantis opponent in 2022) Nikki Fried nodded along.

And then, it happened. Left-wing comedian and actor Sarah Silverman, seemingly unprompted, responded to Joy Reid on Twitter by…correcting her false allegations.

Silverman, who dare to make the point that Joy Reid was a lunatic who lies, faced a swift backlash. On her podcast, the former spoke out against the attempts to silence her.

“We can’t even critique anyone in your own party without punishment,” Silverman said. “One of the hosts of The View was like, ‘What hubris for Sarah Silverman to accuse a Black woman of not reading,’ Oy! Jesus H. – What the f- I f—ing surrender! I cannot believe I need to say this, but I did not criticize Joy-Ann because she’s Black, but because she’s a Harvard-educated journalist with the responsibility ideally of showing the whole picture and not just a piece of a picture.”

Silverman also received flack for her right-wing views regarding cancel culture. She noted that this only encourages isolation and discourages discussion.

It begs the question: Did she take something away from Reid’s recent fracas? I think she did, though, I don’t believe she’ll ever quite admit it.

“And good grief! You dare criticize anything in your own party, you’re the enemy. And that kind of black and white thinking on both sides… it’s such a turn-off to me. That ‘you’re either with us or against us’ kind of vibe with no room for questions or critique- it feels very not liberal to me. It feels like right-wingish,” she added.

In reality, it’s actually not “right-wingish” at all to demand total conformity. The right is more open to a wider range of opinions than the left. They also tolerate those with narrow views and seek to eliminate those who don’t conform.

Silverman seems to understand that deep down. She’s not stupid, but the costs are just too high for these Hollywood dwellers to actually get fully red-pilled. Instead they dance around them, making it evident that there is something clinking in their heads. However, they’re too terrified to talk about it.

Did Sarah Silverman take a lesson from this? She’ll never admit it, but I think, on some level, she did. Regardless of her hedging, she gets what’s happening and doesn’t like a lot of what she’s seeing from her own side. Perhaps one day she’ll get the courage to fully call it out without qualifiers.
