South Korean police are investigating after a doctor mistakenly performed an abortion on the wrong patient.
According to police from Gangseo, a district in the nation’s capital city of Seoul, a pregnant patient visited a local clinic in August, CNN reported.
She was just supposed to receive a nutritional shot, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

However, the nurse failed to check the woman’s identity and injected her with anesthesia. Without verifying the patient’s identity, the doctor performed an abortion on the woman, who was unaware of the procedure.
Police told CNN the doctor and nurse involved in the procedure are under investigation.
The abortion debate
After a 66-year ban, the South Korea’s constitutional court ruled in April to legalize abortions in the East Asian nation, thrilling pro-choice advocates across the country.
The court declared an anti-abortion ban must be lifted by December 31, 2020. However, abortion is technically still illegal under existing laws.
The abortion fight in South Korea echoes a similar cultural battle in the United States.
Earlier this year, protests broke out amid a backdrop of contentious debate over legislation in southern states aimed at restricting abortion.
“Heartbeat bills,” which prohibit most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, passed in nine states this year, with Alabama lawmakers voting to effectively outlaw the procedure entirely.
