Zelenskyy Addresses the World in English, on Eve of NATO Summit – Opinion

Volodymyr Zelenskyy the Ukrainian President released an updated video Wednesday night to his countrymen. But for the first time, it was in English — a sign it was meant for a worldwide audience.

In the one-minute-and-fifty-three second video, he said:

“The War of Russia is not only the war against Ukraine. But its meaning goes beyond that. Russians started the war on freedom. This is not the end of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Russia wants to end freedom for all Europeans; all of humanity. It attempts to demonstrate that it is only brute and inhumane force that can make a difference. It shows that human beings are just as important as the things they make. That’s the reason we all must stop Russia. This war must be stopped by the world.

Everybody who has supported Ukraine for freedom deserves my gratitude. However, the war is not over.  One month has passed since the terrorist attacks on peaceful civilians continue. This has gone on for so long.  This breaks my heart. It breaks the hearts of every Ukrainian and all people on this planet.  That’s why I ask you to stand against the war.

Beginning March 24, exactly one month following the Russian invasion. You must show your support starting on this day, and every day after. Show your support from your workplaces, homes, schools, universities, and other places. Peace is your name. To support Ukraine, support freedom and support life, bring Ukrainian symbols. Bring your Ukrainian symbols to your local squares and streets. You must be visible. It is not enough to say that freedom doesn’t matter. It is important to have peace. Ukraine Matters from March 24th, in your downtowns all together who wish.

To stop the war.”

In recent days Mr. Zelenskyy’s voice has grown louder as Russia attempts to shift the war towards civilians, in order to weaken Ukrainian resolve. His appeal comes on the ever of the NATO Summit in Brussel, which US President Joseph Biden is attending; and where Poland has stated it intends to bring up the topic of a NATO-sponsored peacekeeping mission as part of bringing the conflict to an end — even as the West hesitates to cross the border into Ukraine, fearing that Russia may resort to using chemical and nuclear weapons.
