Ah, the glory days of the Soviet Union! America’s foreign policy and goals were clear then: containment and opposition to communist expansion. Although nuclear weapons are a deterrent for both sides, neither believed that the other side would ever use them.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president has made a significant change in this game Threatening to use nuclear weapons should the U.S. directly confront his forces now raping Ukraine and committing war crimes that the world is watching thanks to ubiquitous mobile phones, brave reporters and camera crews.
President Biden and top members of his administration say we can’t directly intervene to stop Russia because of Putin’s threat. Is that America’s new foreign policy? If we can do little beyond sanctions against nations that have nuclear weapons this will signal to those who have them – and those planning to acquire them – that they have little to fear from America should they proceed with invading Taiwan (China) or attacking Israel (Iran).
Imagine Putin being encouraged by the temporary victory in Ukraine. He then proceeds to invade other countries which were once part of Soviet orbit but now are sovereign states. NATO? Estonia and Latvia, are two examples. Finland shares a border that spans more than 800 miles with Russia. Article 5 of NATO’s founding treaty says an attack on one member country will be considered an attack on all. This treaty was drafted in 1949. Do you think it is still applicable today? Can someone from this administration tell us what lengths we are willing to go in order to support NATO allies? To stop America’s direct engagement with Russian forces in the event of an invasion by one or more NATO nations, could we use Russia’s nuclear weapons excuse? We would love to find out as soon as possible.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for the secular West to understand evil except in broad terms. That is why it appears that there seems to be an “a” pending nuclear deal The relationship between Iran and the U.S. is dangerous. According to reports, Iran will be forced to send its uranium abroad. Russia would be the country? The deal could also include the purchase of Iranian oil as part of the agreement in order to lower gas prices before the fall elections. This would certainly be a deal that the Devil and the highest form of cynicism could make.
The 2016 Obama administration bragged that a deal with Iran had ensured their nuclear program would remain “exclusively peaceful.” If that were true, why are we in more negotiations designed to produce a similar agreement that will also very likely be ignored? Leaders of Iran have said they believe Allah wants them to develop nuclear weapons and they make no secret of their targets – Israel and the United States.
Evil cannot be ignored. This evil must be fought, and even destroyed. That was Ronald Reagan’s goal with the Soviet Union. Putin believes he is able to reincarnate Soviet Union.
If you are interested in paying attention, Scripture offers guidance. You can find it in both the Old Testament and New Testaments. It is perhaps not more clearly stated than the Book of Deuteronomy. The instructions are to the ancient Israelites, but they apply today as evil is not exclusively tied to one generation or nation: “You must purge the evil from among you.” (Deuteronomy 17:7)
There is another thing. Another thing. Wall Street Journal editorial noted, “Putin told us for years what’d he’d do. The West didn’t listen.”
We will be less able to stop it from happening if we know it is coming.
This denial and “kicking the can down the road” also applies to domestic issues, including the necessary reform of Social Security and Medicare. Are we blind? Do we think so? Are we stupid? What is our foreign policy?
