Conservative media outlets published a shocking story about the baby formula shortage on Thursday. A border patrol whistleblower passed along information to Congresswoman Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) that while many store shelves are empty of baby formula, pallets of the product are being sent to border processing facilities. Fox News also reported this information, as did this article in The New York Post.
Republicans noticed this gap and began to point out that “fact checking” was necessary to prove the following: illegal immigration was legally protected by the federal government.
Washington Post where “fact-checker” Glenn Kessler rushed to shoot the story down on Thursday in “The faux outrage that Biden is stockpiling baby formula for undocumented immigrants.”
Cammack said she was not blaming the babies — “it is not the children’s fault at all” — but she and Abbott blasted the Biden administration for allowing this happen.
Biden’s administration does not follow the law, which is the problem — a law that President Donald Trump also followed (though he wasn’t happy about it).
This is what’s known as the Flores consent order. This was a case that began in class action regarding treatment of children from migrant families. The Justice Department negotiated a settlement in 1997 during President Bill Clinton’s administration.
Flores requires that the federal government release undocumented immigrants’ children rather than keeping them in detention. This includes their parents, if they are able, as well as other adults, and licensed programs who will accept custody of those without relatives. A 2015 judicial ruling then said the Flores settlement covered all children in immigration officials’ custody, regardless of whether they were apprehended crossing the border alone or with family.
Is it “faux outrage” that the government offers formula to illegal immigrant infants, even though they are legally required to do so? Do average citizens feel that the priority is given to illegal immigrants? Take a look at his conclusions, which are full of outrage.
This faux outrage is ridiculous. Administration is trying to tackle the serious problem of shortages in baby formula. However, The administration can be criticized for following law and giving baby formula to undocumented immigrant. Anyone who suggests this is the result of specific Biden policies, i.e., his “reckless, out-of-touch priorities,” earns Four Pinocchios.
Weirdest of all is Kessler assigning FOUR Pinocchios to the whistleblower revelation as if there is absolutely zero truth to the story despite the fact that border processing centers are stockpiled with baby formula in stark contrast to empty store shelves around the nation.
PolitiFact threw a “Mostly False,” at Gov. Greg Abbott (Republican from Texas) on the same facts. “The shortage of baby formula continues to cause stress in many American families. However, it doesn’t exempt the government form its legal obligation to provide appropriate care and nutrition for the children under its control.
