With the end of the MLB’s negotiating lockout, teams can now get ready for a season of normal baseball… well, sort of.
While the MLB seems to have moved in the right direction regarding COVID protocols (minor players will no longer need to be vaccinated) some of the MLB’s cities will continue to enforce some nonsensical requirements.
Major leaguers must have their vaccines in order to be allowed to play in Toronto. Although the Canadian government initially allowed unvaccinated athletes into Canada, this exemption expired in January. The Canadian Parliament has been diligently pushing for compliance with all mandates.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that New York City, another major metropolis in which COVID hypersensitivity will continue to affect the natural flow and operations of sports activities. Members of the New York Yankees and New York Mets must get their vaccines if they want to continue playing at home.
NYC Health says that everyone who works in the city must have a vaccine, although the fans and coaches who are visiting will not need it.
“Workers in New York City who perform in-person work or interact with the public in the course of business must show proof that they have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Businesses may not allow any unvaccinated workers to work at their workplace,” the mandate reads.

Even though anyone looking at the fact pattern will see its inconsistent logic, Eric Adams spokesperson said this will somehow protect NYC residents from serious harm.
“We have to worry about the health of almost nine million people. No one is trying to hurt Kyrie Irving or a Yankees player,” the spokesperson said (Irving is facing a similar conundrum in the NBA).
This strategy, while it seems noble to seek to ensure safety for people, is not motivated by a desire to safeguard New Yorkers. Instead it is a desperate effort to retain the power that the government and the leaders of our city enjoyed during the COVID epidemic.
This is how it should be thought about. If you really wanted to protect nine million people, wouldn’t you require everyone to be vaccinated (all athletic personnel from both teams), and have strict protocols in play at the park? If so, why isn’t this happening?
It should make sense in some way. You can either get everyone vaccinated or you can let go once and for all of these power grabs.
