According to a Friday report by The New York Times, the shooter was shot at the police officer who responded to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde on May 24, according to a report.
One of the first officers on the scene had an AR-15 but did not want to risk harming children by attempting to take down the gunman, a senior sheriff’s deputy told the NY Times.

This fatal decision was not reported previously. It represented the second miss opportunity for Robb Elementary School officers to intervene while the gunman was outside. Officials claim that an Uvalde district police officer arrived at Robb Elementary School early and drove by the gunman. He was not seen in the school’s parking lot.
Many officers arrived quickly on May 24 to respond. It was a contrast with the long delay it would take for the gunman to be confronted after he started shooting at fourth-grade classes.
This brief-lived chance is one more detail to explain the events that occurred that day that saw 19 students and 2 teachers killed. The shooter entered the school’s physical building about an hour and fifteen minutes after officers arrived. He was eventually taken out by the Border Patrol tactical team, not the local police force as previously reported.
NBC News reported that the state and local police now work together to understand what happened. Everything from the timing of 911 calls to Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arrendondo’s actions is being heavily scrutinized.
