University of Nevada Launches ‘LGBTQ Studies’ Minor — From the Dept. Of Gender, Race, and Identity – Opinion

If you’re gay, transgender, have a genital anomaly or identify as more than one person…and you need someone to study you, a University of Nevada graduate might perfectly fit the bill.

Once upon a time, such things weren’t substantially covered in college. However, the new educational era is full of promise. And at the University of Nevada, Reno, a new minor has been announced: Attendees can now pursue expertise in “LGBTQ Studies.”

Per the listing on UNR’s website, strap in for six hardy courses — courtesy of the department of “GRI”:

LGBTQ Studies, an 18 unit interdisciplinary minor, is located within the Department of Gender, Race, and Identity. The minor focuses on lesbian, gay and bisexual peoples in America and abroad. It offers courses in arts and humanities as well as social science.

For 18 credits, schools will need to really dive in. Then again, thanks to an ever-expanding category broadened by added initials, there’s probably a good bit of meat on that bone.

This exploration will also examine racism.

LGBTQ Studies examines gender and sexual identities within the social contexts they are constructed in. This includes examining the intersections and relationships of gender and race with class, ethnicity, nationality, citizenship, status, dis/ability, power and questions about social justice for LGBTQ+ individuals and communities. This minor lets students explore theoretical and interdisciplinarity approaches to the field and examine LGBTQ+ experiences across a wide range of contexts, such as law and justice; arts and culture; family and health; politics and economy; and many other areas.

Here are some courses to check out:

  • Visualizing Queer Memory
  • LGBTQ+ Identity and Education
  • The History of LGBTQ Music
  • Histories from the LGBTQ Community
  • Social Justice and Intersectionality
  • Latina/o/x Communication Studies
  • U.S. Writers of Color
  • Indigenous Feminisms
  • Gendered Violence
  • Structural Oppression
  • The Masculinities and Men

How would someone studying lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queer and intersex be able to work in real life? At the very least, they’ll be able to teach about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, and intersex people — to people who’ll then be prepared to teach about them, too.

Either way, perhaps occupational training is overrated; maybe sometimes, it’s all about the social good.

To be clear, UNR’s GRI wing also offers majors:

Gender, Race, and Identity is an interdisciplinary and intersectal department that studies gender, race, and the related structures of power, identity, and difference. These have shaped and continue to shape our society. A B.A. is offered. in Gender, Race, and Identity; undergraduate minors in Black Studies, Ethnic Studies, Holocaust, Genocide, and Peace Studies, Indigenous Studies, Latinx Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Religious Studies, Social Justice, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and at the graduate level, both an M.A. A Graduate Certificate in Gender and Race and Identity.

Secondary school in motion. As noted by Campus Reform, along with the university’s addition of an LGBTQ+ Studies minor comes an increase in tuition:

The average in-state base tuition cost for freshmen rose by approximately 2.8% between 2021-2022 academic years and 2022-2023 academic.

For students from outside of the state, prices:

  • Basic tuition (30 credits) per annum $24,222
  • Annual Mandatory Fees: $1,118
  • On-campus housing and meals (per year) $10,360*
  • Books and supplies (per year) $1,200*

Sum total = $36,900

Although college is more costly than ever before, can you put a value on social progress? There are many revolutionaries who would disagree.
