Two Democrats who supported ‘police reform’ over the past year-and-a-half were carjacked — one in Philadelphia and the other in the Chicago area.

Democratic Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, 62, was robbed at gun point in Philadelphia’s FDR Park on Wednesday afternoon, 16 hours after Illinois State Senator Kimberly Lightford, 53, and her husband, Eric McKennie, were also carjacked on Tuesday night in a suburb 20 minutes outside of Chicago. After the Black Lives Matter movement, both of them supported policies for police reform. They cosponsored legislation in their respective offices which would have allowed mental health specialists to become first responders.
Lightford, the Illinois Black Caucus chairwoman, had also previously supported cutting police budgets in the state, with Chicago proposing to slash $59 million from their police department’s budget while violent crimes soar in the Windy City.
There were no injuries in these incidents. The situation called for police responders in the events — not “mental health specialists” — to deal with carjackers.
Scanlon stated that her keys, Acura MDX and purse were stolen by two black men. Police later located the vehicle and took five of its occupants into custody.
Jim Kenney, Democrat Mayor of Philadelphia, said that his thoughts are with Scanlon.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in our city, and sadly that hasn’t always been the case this year. It’s disheartening and infuriating that criminals feel emboldened to commit such a reckless crime in the middle of the day in what should be a place of peace — one of our city’s parks.”
However, Democrats’ actions have helped criminals to thrive. There’s been a rise in crime in many Democratic cities across the country since the movement to “defund the police” began — and since the police budgets started getting cut. The failure to make criminals accountable by decreasing prosecutions or bail reform is another example of a left-leaning move.
Democrats haven’t seemed to care about the adverse effects that their policies in this regard have had.
Kenney eliminated $14 million from the Philly police budget and cut a $19 million funding increase, on top of the city council’s decision to cut $33 million of funding for the fiscal year 2021. Soros-backed Philadelphia radical district attorney Larry Krasner denied that there was a “crisis of lawlessness.” Yet, in his city, murders are the highest since 2007, at 521 murders so far for the year, a 13 percent increase from the prior year. The number of carjackings has increased 81% and the rate at which robberies are increasing by 27%.
Krasner’s response to all this? Reduce prosecutions dramatically. You have to wonder why these people feel the need to carjack a Congresswoman, in open daylight? With Lightfoot’s support, Chicago has seen a rise in murders and 767 homicides.
Democrats have hampered the ability for the police to respond effectively to crimes and, unfortunately, all are now paying the price, even Democrats who supported cutting the budget.
