SNL has struggled for years to produce quality content. While they do occasionally hit the mark, most of their content is boring and repetitive, which makes it difficult to keep up with the pace.
Unless one of the musical guests or hosts is someone for whom I hold a great deal of respect (like Dave Chappelle), I usually don’t tune in for the show live. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings and enjoy Simu Liu as an actor (his story is pretty nuts), it wasn’t enough to justify me checking in last week when he hosted SNL.
He was featured in a skit that I saw on Facebook. It also features Kenan Thompson (another childhood favorite of mine). I decided to watch it for the five minutes I thought it would be running. It is one of the most hilarious SNL skits that I’ve seen for a while and I am glad that I did.
Thompson is cast as Benson Dubois in the skit. It is the role that Thompson excels at, especially because he can still grin like we do from Nickelodeon’s All-That Days and dish out great amounts of snark. Dubois hosts a game show called “Republican or Not,” where contestants have to guess from a series of clues, whether or not the person for whom the clues are about, is a Republican or not. It’s quite simple.
Well, as you’ll see, Simu Liu portrays contestant Jim Lee, who comes into the show with a great deal of confidence. Michelle Flynn is the second guest. Michelle Flynn is a native Ohioan who feels her knowledge from Ohio will help her. Ego Nwodim portrays Michelle Liu. Each guest takes to the stage and begins to laugh at the hypocrisy between the parties. Every clue that the guests provide shows how there is truly no one standard. Even the word from their “sponsors” was absolutely hilarious. However, the best guest is always the one who leaves!
It’s funny stuff Let’s hope that SNL gets the message that it is okay to laugh at this stuff now. SNL’s YouTube page shows that most skits get around 500,000 views, some as many as over a million, but this skit generated over two-and-a-half million views in six days — making it that week’s most popular episode.
We hope you enjoy it as much and as much as we did.
