The liberal media and their allies have made it abundantly clear that their claims about “common sense” gun control measures have been a giant smokescreen for gun bans and confiscations. On Monday, such was the case. CBS Mornings and NBC’s Today trumpeted far-left Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s proposal to ban handgun ownership and institute buybacks for weapons viewed as scary-looking.
Gayle King, co-host of the show seemed excited by this denial of citizens’ ability to defend themselves. “a sweeping proposal on gun violence not here but in Canada” Trudeau “introduced far-reaching gun legislation that has never gained any traction here in America.”
Tossing to chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes, King suggested it was a sign of hope: “Nancy, a lot of people are asking Congress to take action.”
After noting “[t]here is a small, bipartisan group of U.S. senators who are meeting virtually today and throughout the week…on gun reform proposals,” Cordes went back to cheering Canada: “[W]hile they are taking those initial, tentative steps here, our neighbors to the north appear to be taking immediate action.”
She then played two soundbites from Trudeau in which he sounded exactly like American journalists and fellow lefties and stated in between that Trudeau’s plan would “freeze handgun sales and implement a gun buyback program for military-style weapons.”
Cordes also touted without pushback Biden’s claim about the Second Amendment “never” having been meant to be “absolute” (click “expand”):
TRUDEAU: Gun violence must be reduced. The gun debate cannot become so divisive that no progress is made. That cannot be allowed to happen in the United States.
CORDES: The new proposal announced by Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, would freeze handgun sales and implement a gun buyback program for military-style weapons. These weapons were ban in Canada after a massacre in Nova Scotia, 2020 that resulted in 22 deaths.
TRUDEAU: If we don’t act quickly and firmly, things will only get worse.
CORDES: Yesterday, President Biden stated that he would like to see stricter gun regulations at home. This is especially true when it concerns the AR-15-style rifle used in Uvalde (Texas) by the gunman.
Fretting “there’s little [Biden] can do on his own without Congress,” Cordes returned overseas to point to New Zealand as another example for the U.S. (click “expand”):
CORDES – President Biden will later welcome Jacinda Ardern (New Zealand Prime Minister) to the White House. After 50 victims were killed in two Christchurch mosques by a gunman, she imposed a ban on all semi-automatic guns nationwide.
ARDERN [on CBS’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, 05/24/22]: We all said “Never again” when we witnessed something similar happen. It was then that it fell on politicians to address that issue.
CORDES – Prime Minister Ardern, not President Biden is capable of taking major actions like this without the need for legislation. That’s one difference between New Zealand & the U.S.
“Yeah, we need much more than just talk right now,” co-host Nate Burleson replied.
In the 8:00 a.m. Eastern hour’s Eye Opener, far-left co-host Tony Dokoupil scolded those unwilling to go big (presumably like in Canada and New Zealand): “After the major Uvalde massacre, lawmakers consider minor changes in gun laws.”
Of course, none of the broadcast networks brought up the fact that President Biden called for the banning of 9mm ammunition, which FoxNews.com Submitted accounted for “approximately 56.8% of new pistols produced in 2019, making up about 42% of pistols produced between 2010 and 2020.”
NBC’s TodaySavannah Guthrie (co-host) reported Trudeau during a 28 second briefing “propos[ed] a national freeze on handgun sales”That would be it. “illegal to buy, sell or import handguns anywhere in Canada and the move comes in response to an increase in homicides in that country” though it’s “[u]nclear when the legislation will become law.”
On Monday’s NBC Nightly News, fill-in anchor Tom Llamas invoked Trudeau before senior White House correspondent Kelly O’Donnell tying the Memorial Day remembrances for deceased servicemen and women to gun control: “Last week’s shooting has reignited the debate over gun laws. And tonight in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just announced legislation to freeze handgun ownership there.”
The liberal media’s cheering of proposals to cripple the Second Amendment was made possible thanks to the endorsement of advertisers such as Crest and Google. Follow the links to see their contact information at the MRC’s Conservatives Fight Back page.
